Women’s 200m Free

2015 World Champion Katie Ledecky once again dominated her morning swim after destroying the 400 last night. The 19 year old posted a 1:55.60. That is the fifth best in the world this year, over a second off her season best.

Leah Smith also dazzled last night in the 400 freestyle. This morning she secured a lane in the semifinal with a 1:56.47.

Melanie Margalis was incredible relaxed before her swim and posted a 1:57.61 to win the second circle seeded heat in a statement swim and the third overall seed.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt won the first circle seeded heat in 1:57.77. Her NBAC teammate Cierra Runge was just behind her in 1:58.11 for the fifth spot.

Shannon Vreeland was a relay swimmer in 2012 and swam a 1:58.29 this morning to give herself another shot.

With a 100 backstroke final looming ahead tonight, Missy Franklin tied for the seventh seed in 1:58.61. Georgia’s Hali Flickinger shares that seventh spot.

Sarah Gibson of Texas A&M was the first swimmer under two minutes this morning in 1:59.19 and she will return ninth.

Sprint star Simone Manuel clocked a 1:59.27 this morning for tenth, followed by Katie Drabot in 11th (1:59.28). Karlee Bispo (1:59.29) was just .01 behind her.

Trojan Chlesea Chenault (1:59.67) finished 13th. Katie McLaughlin played an important role in the 4×200 freestyle relay last summer at the World Championships. This morning she stopped the clock in 1:59.76 to slip into semifinals.

Mallory Comerford of Louisville swam a 1:59.78 and Sarah Henry (2:00.00) will also complete the semifinals.

Men’s 200m Butterfly

World record holder Michael Phelps opened his Trials schedule with a 1:56.68 swim for the top seed in his signature event.

Pace Clark led the way through the second circle seeded heat and finished in 1:56.90. At U.S. Nationals last summer Jack Conger finished second to Phelps. This morning he was a 1:57.33.

With an Olympic berth already under his belt, Chase Kalisz swam a 1:57.34 for the fourth seed. Kyle Higgins (1:57.41) will return to semifinals in fifth.

Tyler Clary, who will also have a 200 freestyle final tonight, will return in the sixth spot after posting a 1:57.42 this morning.

Matthew Klueh demolished his seed time with a 1:57.59 to come back seventh. Adam Hinshaw (1:57.60) and Justin Wright (1:57.68) will be eighth and ninth.

Junior World record holder Andrew Seliskar posted a 1:57.77 for tenth. In 1:57.94 Zach Harting also earned a lane in tonight’s semifinals.

Tom Shields was eighth at the 2015 World Championships in this event. This morning he was out quickly but finished in 1:57.96 for twelfth.

Mick Litherland (1:58.43), Bobby Bollier (1:58.44), Georgia Bulldog Gunnar Bentz (1:58.61), and Christian McCurdy (1:58.70) also earned spots in tonight’s semifinals.

Reed Matthews was the first swimmer under two minutes this morning with a 1:59.10 and he will be the first alternate.

Women’s 200 IM

Having secured her Olympic berth in the 400 IM, Maya DiRado took the top seed for the shorter IM as well. She touched in 2:11.66 in prelims this morning.

2012 Olympian Caitlin Leverenz posted a 2:11.89 as she won the first circle seeded heat in her quest for a ticket to Rio. That swim will make her second headed into semifinals.

In an impressive double, Melanie Margalis hopped back in the pool after her third ranked 200 freestyle. She clocked a 2:12.36 to win the second circle seeded heat for the third seed overall.

NCAA Champion Ella Eastin was second to her Stanford teammate DiRado in the final circle seeded heat and fourth overall in 2:12.87.

Madisyn Cox (2:13.48) finished fifth and third place finisher in the 400 IM Bethany Galat touched sixth (2:13.65).

Margaret Aroesty (2:13.99), Emily Cameron (2:14.21), Kaitlyn Jones (2:14.26), and Kate Mills (2:14.53) are sventh through tenth.

Kristin Malone swam a 2:15.06 for the 11th seed ahead of Karlee Bispo in 2:15.20. 2015 PanAmerican silver medalist Meghan Small swam a 2:15.22 for the thirteenth spot.

Brooke Zeiger (2:15.50) of the University of Minnesota, Cal’s Celina Li (2:15.60), and Meaghan Raab (2:15.80) also earned semifinals lanes.

Elizabeth Beisel was a no show this morning after her second place 400 IM and a difficult 200 freestyle this morning.
