2016 Canadian Trials: Day Two Prelims Live Recap

The 2016 Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials continued with the athletes participating in the following events:

  • Women’s 50 Breast PARA
  • Men’s 50 Breast PARA
  • Women’s 100 Breast PARA
  • Men’s 100 Breast PARA
  • Men’s 200 Fly
  • Women’s 100 Back
  • Men’s 100 Back
  • Women’s 400 IM

The top 10 Canadian swimmers will advance to the A finals, while up to four non-Canadian swimmers can swim in the B finals. Hit refresh for the latest coverage.

Women’s 50 Breast PARA:

Tammy Cunnington posted the top time in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke with a 1:16.44 in the S4 division. She is the only woman to participate in the S4 division for this event in 2016. Victoria Grzincic of the S2 division finished second with a time of 2:35.60.

Men’s 50 Breast PARA:

Jonathan Dieleman just barely missed the S5 Canadian record of 49.88 in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 50.39.

Women’s 100 Breast PARA:

Sarah Girard posted the top time in the 100-meter breaststroke with a swift 1:24.52 in the S9 division. Also swimming in the S9 division was Katarina Roxon who stopped the clock at 1:26.89. Justine Morrier was a close third with a time of 1:26.92 in the S14 division.

Reilly Bird (S9) finished fourth with a 1:27.03, while Kirstie Kaskos (S14) and Angela Marina (S14) were fifth and sixth with times of 1:32.71 and 1:34.96 respectively.

Men’s 100 Breast PARA:

James Leroux topped the men’s 100-meter breaststroke field, stop the clock at a 1:11.36 to win the S9 division. Maxim Rousselle grabbed the second-place seed with a 1:12.23 in the S14 division, while a close third went to Isaac Bouckley (S10) and his 1:12.26.

Gordie Mitchell of the S14 division posted a fourth-place finish in prelims with a 1:13.39, while Patrick Waters (S9) took fifth with a 1:13.63.

Tyler Mrak (S13, 1:17.07), Adam Rahier (S14, 1:18.23), and Alexander Elliot (S10, 1:18.33) finished sixth through eighth respectively.

Men’s 200 Fly:

Jan Switkowski posted the top time in the event as a non-Canadian, stopping the clock at a 1:57.01. Mick Litherland (1:58.06) and Michael Klueh (1:58.55) turned in top times to return in the ‘B’ final with Switkowski.

Nicolaas Dekker was the fastest Canadian in the event posting a final time of 1:59.35. Coleman Allen returns as the second-place seed for tonight’s ‘A’ final with a 1:59.39.

Mack Darragh rounded out the top three Canadian finalists with a time of 2:00.56.

Women’s 100 Back:

Kylie Masse delivered a new Canadian Record in the women’s 100-meter back, lowering the record by half a second. The former record was a 59.68 before Masse dashed to a 59.17 to return as the top qualifier in tonight’s ‘A’ final.

Dominique Bouchard grabbed second overall in prelims with a time of 1:00.43, while Alexia Zevnik finished third in prelims with a time of 1:00.98.

Mackenzie Glover and Danielle Hanus turned in matching times of 1:01.18 to return as tied for fourth. Hilary Caldwell followed close behind with a 1:01.27.

Men’s 100 Back: 

Cal teammates Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley turned in the top two times in the men’s 100-meter back, stopping the clock at 53.66 and 54.08 respectively.

Corey Main delivered a 54.27 for the third fastest time in prelims, but will settle for the ‘B’ final with Murphy and Pebley.

That leaves Russell Wood with the top Canadian time for the morning, posting a 54.87 to return as tonight’s top ‘A’ finalist.

Javier Acevedo grabbed the second-place seed with a 55.14, while Jeremy Dezwirek returns as third tonight with a 55.28.

Women’s 400 IM:

Elizabeth Beisel powered to the top in the women’s 400-meter IM this morning with a 4:35.82, finishing 11 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Sydney Pickrem. Beisel’s finish rockets her to sixth in the world rankings for 2016, and makes her the top seed coming back in tonight’s ‘B’ final.

Pickrem was the top Canadian finisher in the event, stopping the clock at 4:46.86, while Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson grabbed the second-place seed for tonight’s ‘A’ final with a 4:47.40.

Emily Overholt added to her seed time of 4:32.52 to finish third in prelims with a 4:48.33 just ahead of Marni Oldershaw’s 4:49.73.
