2009 European Synchronized Swimming Champions Cup: Spain Wishes to Succeed Russia

LEN Press Release
ANDORRA LA VELLA, Andorra, May 8. The Principality of Andorra in the Pyrenees will host this year's European Synchronised Swimming Champions Cup on May 15-17, with entries from eleven nations. The hot medal favourites for the three events: duet, team and free combination (the solo event is not on the programme) are Russia and Spain.

Gemma Mengual will be the big star in the small country, situated at an altitude of about 2,000 metres, between Spain and France. The 32 year-old 2008 4-time European Champion is accompanied by Andrea Fuentes in the duet. Together the two Spaniards won Olympic silver in Beijing last year. They will both also compete in the team event and the free combination. Spain thus has a chance to succeed Russia that has traditionally dominated the Synchronised Swimming Champions Cup.

As Italy has entered the 2008 European Silver Medal duet of Giulia Lapi and Beatrice Adelizzi and Ukraine are present with Bronze Medallists Ksenia Sydorenko and Daria Yushko, this will be a virtual European Championship. Among others, Russia will be represented by Olympic Champion Anastasia Davydova together with Svetlana Romashina in the technical routine. Natalia Ishchenko will join Svetlana Romashina for the free routine. Both were on the team that won Olympic gold in Beijing.

Russian competitors earned gold medals in all three events at the last edition held in Rome in 2007. The eventual 2008 Olympic Champions Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova finished on top in the duet. Spain achieved two silver medals, Italy won a silver and two bronze, while Ukraine earned a bronze medal.

The following LEN Member Federations have entered the event at the "Piscine dels Serradells" in Andorra's capital Andorra la Vella:
