2007 Collegiate Water Polo Association Women’s Preseason Polls Released

BRIDGEPORT, Pennsylvania, January 25. THE 2007 preseason women's collegiate polls have been released with Michigan State University, Hartwick College, the University of Redlands and the University of Southern California earning first place nods.

The University of Southern California is the preseason #1 in the National Top 20 varsity poll as the Trojans edged out the University of California, Los Angeles with 99 points to the Bruins 96 points. UCLA, the two-time defending national champions after defeating USC 9-6 last year, is followed by Stanford University, the University of California-Berkeley adn the University of Hawaii in the top five teams in the poll. San Diego State University, Arizona State University, the University of California-Irvine, the University of California-Davis and the University of California-Santa Barbara round out the top 10. Hartwick College, the defending CWPA Eastern Champion, is ranked 12th in the poll, while the University of Michigan (#13), Princeton University (#18), Indiana University (T-#20) and Brown University (T-#20) round out the CWPA selections in the poll.

Hartwick ranks first in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll as Hawks were picked first on all of the ballots to earn 100 points, while the University of Michigan, Princeton University, Indiana University, Brown University, Bucknell University, the University of Maryland, Harvard University, George Washington University and Mercyhurst College followed in second through 10th, respectively.

In the Division III poll, the University of Redlands earned 99 points to earn the top ranking. Redlands, which finished #4 in the final 2006 poll, is followed by Pomona Pitzer Colleges which edged out 2006 #1 ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges 93-to-92 for second place. Whittier College and the University of California-East Bay round out the top five.

Among the club programs, defending national champion Michigan State University is projected to defend its national title with 100 points, while the University of Florida (95 points), Fresno State University (90 points) and Miami University (85 points) trail in second, third and fourth place, respectively, as the top 20 teams in the nation in the final 2006 poll enter the season in the same order.
