Leah Smith, Courtney Bartholomew, Austin Quinn Win Three Times As Virginia Beats Notre Dame

Virginia and Notre Dame met in an ACC matchup in Charlottesville on January 9. The No. 1 ranked Virginia women won 243-105, while the No. 21 ranked Virginia men beat Notre Dame 182.5-170.5. The Cavaliers finished first in 13 events.

Women’s Meet

Notre Dame won both of the women’s diving events, as Lindsay Sreepey took first in the 3m (322.95) and Emma Gaboury dove to first in the 1m (282.07). Virginia went 1-2 in the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay, while Notre Dame took the top spot in the 400 free relay. Jen Marrkand won the 200 fly by over five seconds, posting a time of 1:57.29. Virginia’s Laura Simon won both the 100 breast (1:01.09) and 200 breast (2:13.45), and Ellen Thomas won the 50 free (23.27) and 100 free (49.84). Leah Smith won the 500 freestyle (4:39.75), 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. She later went on to win the 1000 (9:40.22) and 200 free (1:47.55). Virginia swept the top three spots in the women’s 200 IM, led by Courtney Bartholomew in 1:59.35. Bartholomew, less than one month after breaking the American record in the 100 SCM back at the Duel in the Pool, also won the 200 back (1:55.21) and the 100 back (53.07).

Men’s Meet

The Fighting Irish defeated the Cavaliers in both the 200 and 400 free relays, as well as the 400 medley relay. Virginia won the 200 medley relay. Freshman Sam Magnan won the 500 free in 4:28.18 and the 1000 in 9:17.62. Virginia swept the men’s 100 breast, led by Murat Yildirim with a time of 56.23. Notre Dame’s Bogac Ayhan won the 100 back in 48.99 and Matthew Grauslys won the 100 fly (48.32) for the Fighting Irish. Austin Quinn was a triple-event winner for the Cavaliers, winning the 200 IM (1:49.38), 200 back (1:46.98), and 200 free (1:38.87).

Virginia returns to the pool on January 15 and 16 as they take on Towson and ACC rival Virginia Tech. Notre Dame races Northwestern on January 16.
