A 14-year-old swimmer died last week following an incident in an Illinois pool.

Julian Urbina, of Calumet City, was doing conditioning with teammates Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Thornton Fractional South High School when he went underwater at the deep end of the pool and didn’t resurface, according to police. It was not an official team practice since the season began Monday.

The death of Urbina, a Thornton Fractional North High School student, was ruled an accident by the Cook County medical examiner. Another swimmer located Urbina and pulled him from the pool, and CPR was started, police said.

An autopsy revealed his official cause of death as “anoxic encephalopathy,” or deprivation of oxygen to the brain, and near drowning, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Urbina was taken first to Community Hospital in Munster and then to a Chicago-area hospital, according to NWI, where he was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“We are deeply saddened by this news,” Superintendent Teresa Lance said in the statement.

The school district planned to make grief counselors available to the students.

Mariya Holzhauser Good point. We do this type of exercise too. Our coach is very strict in regards to doing it safely. Good reminder for kids to be careful & not feel the need to see who can hold their breath the longest. I feel sad for this young man & his family. May he rest in peace. ??

Why oh why are they still doing this! Teach correct stroke technique…and better to have a preseason of learning something every city or town needs from its swimmers…teach them and certify them as LIFEGUARDS! Great conditioning…use of all their muscles especially brains! CPR etc… Captains practices, which can include hazing….not saying this was…need adult supervision…not just a bit older teammate…
