The Art of Swim – A Poem That Celebrates the Sport of Swimming

From time to time, Swimming World publishes submissions from readers. The following poem, an ode to the sport, was submitted by Ronel Ankam, a sophomore at Athens Area High School in Pennsylvania.

The Art of Swim – By Ronel Ankam

Rushing through the water, with pace and speed,
Moving with force, keeping the lead,
These and more, all to succeed,
It is the art of swim.

Through training and practice, you master your craft,
And through the rather intense training, we chuckled and laughed,
A sport that likely requires more effort than being enlisted in the draft,
It is the art of swim.

And through this relentless training, we stand tall,
We train to be stronger, faster, and better than all,
We will climb to the top and answer the call,
It is the art of swim.

We swim like dolphins, and sometimes like fish,
Beating school records is our greatest wish,
We are sharks in meets and beat opponents to the finish,
It is the art of swim.

The team and I, we strive for the top,
To be first in the district, and we will not stop,
All while jumping, diving, and doing belly-flops,
It is the art of swim

And at the end, when all is said and done,
And the season’s meets have all been won,
And we sit and watch the golden dawn,
It is the art of swim.

As a United States Marine I find this poem very offensive that was just shared with me. As a swimming athlete myself I can not remember a single practice or season of swimming that could even slightly compare with the horror of war. This is offensive. I will be sharing this with my brothers.
This sophomore should be ashamed of this poem. I can not believe you shared this on your website. Semper Fi.
