Tar Heels Get 2025 Verbal From US Open Qualifier Sam Huggins

NEW COMMIT: The University of North Carolina has picked up a new verbal commitment for the 2025-26 season and beyond from U.S. Open qualifier Sam Huggins of State College, Pennsylvania.

He will join Granger Bartee in Chapel Hill as a member of the Tar Heels’ Class of 2029.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! Thank you to my family, friends, coaches and teammates for supporting me and helping me achieve this. I would also like to thank the coaches at Carolina for this amazing opportunity! Go Heels!”

Huggins does his club swimming with Nittany Lion Aquatic Club and had a great showing at the ISCA International Senior Cup. There, he won 200m free, placed second in the 200m IM, and took third in both the 400m free and 1500m free.

His best times include:

  • 100 free – 45.76
  • 200 free – 1:37.31
  • 500 free – 4:23.95
  • 1650 free – 15:35.67

Currently a junior at State College Area High School, Huggins earned a pair of silver medals in the 200 free and 500 free at the Pennsylvania 3A State Championships. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American took third and second, respectively, in those events as a sophomore.

The Tar Heels placed eighth at the 2024 ACC Championships under head coach Mark Gangloff.
