SEC Swimming and Diving Championships

Auburn, Alabama 2020

The final night of the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships had the finals of the 1650, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 400 free relay. Tennessee and Florida won the SEC team titles as the Gators won their eighth straight men’s team title and the Vols won their first women’s title in school history.

Florida’s Bobby Finke won the 1650 and completely smashed the records in that event as he won by over 30 seconds. It was the only event the Gators won on Saturday night.

The Tennessee women had a big showing from Erika Brown in the 100 free as she moved to second all-time in the event and won her third title of the weekend.

Texas A&M’s Shaine Casas broke a long-standing meet record in the 200 back that belonged to Ryan Lochte set in 2005 in the 200 back as Casas helped the Aggies finish second overall. A&M’s Benjamin Walker also won the 200 breaststroke.

Alabama was the top school of the night as the Tide collected wins from Kensey McMahon (1650), Rhyan White (200 back) and their men’s 400 free relay team. Their in-state rival Auburn won the women’s relay to close out the championships in their home pool.

LSU’s Brooks Curry also won the 100 freestyle for LSU’s first SEC title in men’s swimming since Evan Martinec won the 100 back in 2004.

Georgia’s Zoie Hartman also won the 200 breaststroke.

Women’s 1650 Free

Alabama sophomore Kensey McMahon had a dominating performance in the 1650 freestyle as she won with a 15:43.74 to give the Crimson Tide another win on the weekend. Tennessee’s Amanda Nunan also had a very clutch swim with a 15:53.39 for the runner-up spot as she needed to swim big because of Florida’s presence in the final heat.

The Gators finished in third with Leah Braswell (15:54.54) waving the flag while Taylor Ault (16:08.10) finished in seventh place. Florida is now within seven points of Tennessee as the meet concludes tonight.

Arkansas’ Peyton Palsha (16:01.99) swam in the earlier timed finals heats and she held up for fifth place. Auburn’s Emily Hetzer (15:55.28), Averee Preble (16:06.54) and Kentucky’s Beth McNeese (16:13.71) also scored in the top eight.

Men’s 1650 Free

The Florida distance swimmers have been on fire at the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama. Not long after an American record from Kieran Smith in the 500 free on Wednesday, Bobby Finke absolutely torched the 1650 free American record with a 14:12.08.

Finke started fast and finished fast. He was out under American record pace from the very first 50 and built and built on that lead over the pace. Not only did he smash the 14:18.25 American record set in December 2017, he completely tore apart the NCAA record of 14:22.41 set by Clark Smith in March 2017.

Women’s 200 Back

Alabama is off to a great start on the final night of the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in their rival’s home pool as Rhyan White followed up her impressive morning swim with a 1:48.15 in the 200 backstroke, not long after Kensey McMahon won the 1650 free. White was faster this morning when she was a 1:48.0 but held on to deny Kentucky’s Asia Seidt (1:48.86) a fourth straight SEC title in this event.

Seidt still had a good swim for second place as Kentucky had four total A-finalists in this event. Ali Galyer (1:49.92) finished in third while Caitlin Brooks (1:51.60) and Sophie Sorenson (1:52.90) placed fifth and seventh.

The Florida Gators passed Tennessee after the 200 back with Sherridon Dressel (1:50.93) placing fourth for the Gators and Tennessee’s Meghan Small (1:51.80) getting sixth.

Auburn’s Sonnele Oeztuerk (1:53.49) finished in eighth.

Women’s 100 Free

Tennessee senior Erika Brown became the second woman to break 46 seconds in the 100 freestyle as she swam a 45.83 on the final night of the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. Brown sits only behind Simone Manuel’s 45.56 from 2017 on the all-time list as she won tonight ahead of a pretty stacked field with Arkansas senior Anna Hopkin coming in second at 46.20 and Auburn senior Julie Meynen coming in third at 46.96.

Brown helped Tennessee grab a lead over Florida with three events to go. She will not be on the 400 free relay.

Auburn’s Claire Fisch (47.27) finished in fourth as Auburn looks like they could win the 400 free relay to close out the meet with freshman Abbey Webb (49.04) coming in eighth place as well.

Georgia’s Veronica Burchill (47.32), Tennessee’s Tjasa Pintar (47.90) and Alabama’s Kalia Antoniou (48.71) also swam in the championship final.

Men’s 100 Free

LSU freshman Brooks Curry has been on fire all week at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships and he finished off the meet with a 41.81 in the 100 freestyle in winning the Tigers’ first SEC men’s title since 2004. Curry won by 0.01 as he ran down Alabama senior Zane Waddell (41.82) at the finish and ended his ESPN interview with a “Geaux Tigahs!” in his best Ed Orgeron impression.

Florida’s Kieran Smith, who has had an incredible week at SECs, was third at 42.14 in a weak event for him. South Carolina’s Lewis Burras (42.28) finished in fourth for a big swim for the Gamecocks. Tennessee’s Alec Connolly (42.50), Texas A&M’s Adam Koster (42.62), Mark Theall (42.66) and Florida’s Khader Baqlah (42.66) also swam in the championship final.

Kentucky’s Bailey Bonnett (2:07.92) finished in third as she helped Kentucky close the gap on Florida for second place in the team standings. The Wildcats also had Gillian Davey finish in sixth place with a 2:09.32.

Tennessee’s Alexis Yager moved up to fourth place with a strong swim of 2:08.11 as she finished ahead of LSU freshman Niamh Robinson (2:08.37) who also had a really good swim.

South Carolina’s Albury Higgs (2:09.33) and Florida’s Vanessa Pearl (2:09.92) also swam in the championship final.

Walker’s freshman teammate Andres Puente (1:52.39) finished in second for the Aggies to complete the 1-2 sweep as Texas A&M is in a dead tie with Georgia for second place in the team standings.

Georgia junior Jack Dalmolin (1:53.94) finished in seventh place for the Bulldogs to get them to tied for second.

Florida’s Grant Sanders (1:52.49) nearly stole the 200 breast from lane 1 but he ended up third, dropping two seconds from his morning swim.

Alabama freshmen Liam Bell (1:52.93) and Derek Maas (1:53.15) finished in fourth and fifth for the Tide, who have had a very good night.

Florida’s Marco Guarente (1:53.34) and Missouri’s Will Goodwin (1:56.46) also swam in the championship final.
