NCAA Division II Championships: Nova Southeastern Women Complete Repeat

All meet at the NCAA Division II Championships, it had been Nova Southeastern out front. With an emphatic start on the final night Saturday at SPIRE Institute, the Sharks put the finishing touches on a second straight title.

Emily Trieschmann swam to her fourth win of the meet in a Nova 1-2 as the Sharks pulled away.

On the men’s side, the University of Tampa took what started as a 13-point lead over Drury at the beginning of the night and stretched it out to more than 50 to claim its first national title.

Women’s 1,650 freestyle

Add another title for Emily Trieschmann, Nova Southeastern’s fab junior. She went 16:18.73 to rout the field by more than 15 seconds. The only one who stayed even remotely close was trailing partner Hailey Williams, who pulled into a silver medal. With it, the Sharks stretched their lead out to 81.5 points over Colorado Mesa.

Simon Fraser’s Tori Meklensek secured the bronze medal, 3.5 seconds ahead of Wayne State’s Allison Vassilakos.

Men’s 1,650 freestyle

Wayne State freshman Mohamed Khalil Ben Ajmia won an exciting 1,650, his time of 14:57.68 outdistancing UIndy’s Cedric Buessing. Ben Ajmia was within 2.5 seconds of Fabio Dalu’s national record.

Buessing grabbed silver in 15:05.17. Third was West Chester’s Paul Demesy.

Women’s 100 freestyle

Kiara Pozvai picked up a win for Henderson State in the sprints, defending her top seed from prelims by going 48.88 to win at night. Lynn nearly had two on the podium, with Laura Dekoninck tying for second and Luna Mertins in third. Dekoninck went 48.57, even with Augustana’s Bryn Greenwaldt, who was a half-second quicker than prelims. Ashlyn Moore of Drury was fifth, and Emily Traube of Truman State also broke 50 seconds to win the B final.

Men’s 100 freestyle

Henderson State got that podium pair in the men’s 100 free, and it came with a little redemption. Disqualified in the 50 free, Lamar Taylor atoned in the 100 free. He was third in prelims before blasting a 42.64 at night to edge teammate Jack Armstrong by .04 seconds. They were separated by .06 at the 50-meter wall, and Armstrong came back .02 quicker.

Nova Southeastern’s Marcel Snitko finished third in 43.19. Matthew Bosch of Grand Valley was fourth in 43.24 (albeit slower than B final winner Nico Jacinto of Lewis). Tampa had two A finalists in fifth-place Blake Moran and seventh-place Ian Cooper.

Women’s 200 backstroke

It’s a double backstroke double for Colorado Mesa, led by Agata Naskret. The sophomore bullied the field in 1:55.30 to win by more than a second after she had been the third seed in prelims. Naskret had won the 100 back the night before, and she had teammates finish seventh and eighth to briefly get them within 50.5 points of Nova Southeastern.

The silver medal went to Alexandra Waller of Drury, who had been the top seed out of prelims. She was a full second faster in 1:56.61, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Naskret. Tampa’s Lindsey Louder was third in 1:57.72, with teammate Sierra Gillan sixth.

Men’s 200 backstroke

The other have of the CMU backstroke U was Benjamin Sampson, who made it four titles, doubling up in backstroke and the individual medleys. This one came with a record-setting flourish, going 1:40.34 to take down the national record.

Tampa was the big winner, though, with Santiago Corredor and Parker Knollman on the podium. Corredor finished second in 1:41.59. Knollman, the top seed out of prelims, was marginally quicker at night but slipped to third in 1:41.99. He was nearly a second up on Drury’s Ivan Adamchuk in fourth.

Women’s 200 breaststroke

Speaking of doubles, chalk one up for UIndy’s Celina Schmidt, who compounded her 100 breast title by going 2:10.82 in the 200 breast. She had been the second seed in prelims but trimmed more than two seconds off at night. She was nearly a full second clear of said top seed, Drury’s Claire Conover, who went 2:11.79 for silver. Drury picked up both minor medals, with Mellie Wijk a distant third in 2:14.06.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

Drury’s Davi Mourao was denied a second title at the touch, with the top three separated by .09 seconds in the race of the night.

When the wash settled, Oklahoma Christian’s John Amrein got the win in 1:54.66, defending his top seed from the morning. Mourao wasn’t even the first Drury swimmers to the wall, mate Joao Nogueira beating him by .03 in 1:54.72.

Filipe Pinheiro of McKendree and Nova Southeastern’s Inigo Marina had held the lead at 150 yards, at which point five swimmers were blanketed by .35 seconds. But they slid to fifth and sixth, respectively. Mourou’s 29.20 final 50 was the fastest of the field, but not enough to overcome Amrein and Nogueira.

Women’s 1-meter diving

Grand Valley’s Madison Kooistra was sensational in finals to take the gold medal with a score of 463.95 points. She had been second in prelims to 1-meter champion Alexa Gonczi, but she stepped it up in finals to get the top spot.

Mikaela Senkus of Wayne State snuck up from fifth in prelims to the silver spot with a tally of 451.20. Gonczi, a junior from Clarion, was third in 442.90, medaling ahead of West Florida’s Olivia Nelson. Clarion also placed fifth, seventh and 13th.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay

Safety was the name of the game for Nova Southeastern, which coasted home in fourth place and a time of 3:21.21 for its team championship.

As a consolation prize, Colorado Mesa took home gold, the team of Agata Naskret, Ada Qunell, Elli Williams and Lauren White going a nice clean 3:20.00 to win. They were .55 up on Drury, with Wingate third in 3:20.99. The fastest split of the race belonged to Williams in 49.38.

Men’s 400 freestyle

Top two in the 100 free bodes well for the 400 free relay, and Henderson State opted to frontload their stars. It worked, Lamar Taylor and Jack Armstrong finding clean water for Jase Pinckney and Patryke Dabrowski to hold on for dear life. The result was a time of 2:52.81 that held off Tampa by .20 seconds. Henderson State led the field by .76 seconds and Tampa by 1.65 at the midpoint. Taylor went 43.08, Armstrong 42.67.

Only four others broke 43 seconds, among them Tampa anchor Blake Moran in 42.64. The fastest split was Matthew Bosch of Grand Valley in 42.38 to help them finish fifth.

Behind Tampa was McKendree in 2:53.18, .03 up on Colorado Mesa.
