Olympics, Diving: Australia's Matthew Mitcham Stuns China in Men's Tower -- August 23, 2008

BEIJING, China, August 23. EIGHT proved not to be a lucky number for Chinese diving as Australia's Matthew Mitcham blocked China's gold-medal sweep with an epic finale in the men's platform competition.

Mitcham completed the last session of dives with a 537.95-point tally to knock Zhou Luxin of China into silver position. Zhou finished less than five points behind Mitcham with a total of 533.15 points. The outcome stopped China from going eight-for-eight in diving.

Russia's Gleb Galperin also beat out China's Huo Liang, 525.80 to 508.40, for bronze.

Americans David Boudia (441.45) and Thomas Finchum (412.65) took 10th and 12th, respectively.

August 24, 2008 Wow this is shocking. Mitchum "came out" of closet to the mainstream press in Australia within the last 6 months and I thought he'd fold between the combined pressure from that as well as the pressure from the Chinese, who are otherwise mostly in a league of their own.
