ZUMO Performance of the Week: Lilly King Throws Down History’s First Sub-56 100 Breast

This week’s ZUMO Performance of the Week goes to Lilly King for her record-breaking swim in the 100 breaststroke this weekend at the 2019 Big Ten Championships.
The Indiana senior made history again last Friday, becoming the first woman to swim the 100-yard breaststroke under 56-seconds. Out in a blistering 26.11, King came home in 29.77 to finish in 55.88, breaking her own NCAA, American, and U.S. Open record of 56.25 from last year. You can see full splits and video of race below:

Her performance gives her the top 5 fastest performances all-time and marks the sixth time she has been under 57.00 in the event. Tennessee’s Molly Hannis is the closest on the all-time list to King, with a 56.64 from 2017. Those two are the only two in history to swim under the 57-second barrier.
In a post-race interview, King said that she set the goal of going a :55 at Big Ten’s back in November because she wanted to do it “in her home pool.” Looking at her splits, the Hoosier improved by about 2-tenths on the front and back half of her swim, and with a little more rest heading into NCAA’s only time will tell how much more she can improve. When asked about where to go from here, her answer was simple: “Go faster.”
Congratulations to Lilly King on earning ZUMO’s Performance of the Week!
