Zimmer Tops Coughlin in 100 Back at AIS International Meet

CANBERRA, Australia, November 6. PROVING herself ready to roll for next month's Australian World Championship Trials, Tay Zimmer secured an impressive victory Sunday during the final session of the AIS International Meet. Racing the 100 backstroke, Zimmer knocked off Olympic champion and world-record holder Natalie Coughlin.

A 21-year-old, Zimmer popped a mark of 1:00.99 in the two-lap dorsal to edge Coughlin, who touched the wall in 1:01.15. Zimmer trailed slightly at the 50-meter mark, but overtook Coughlin down the stretch. Great Britain's Lizzie Simmonds, a 15-year-old rising star, was third in 1:02.64.

A much-anticipated event, the women's 100 freestyle went to Jodie Henry, whose 55.76 effort was enough to hold off Aussie mates Alice Mills (56.33) and Sally Foster (56.59). Meanwhile, Aussie Kenrick Monk was the only man under 1:50 in the 200 free, as he prevailed over the four-lap distance in 1:49.72.

Brenton Rickard was the swiftest performer in the 100 breaststroke, using a mark of 1:01.81 to hold off Britain's Chris Watkinson (1:02.86). The British contingent, however, got a victory when Terri Dunning uncorked a swim of 2:09.97 in the 200 butterfly. Felicity Galvez lost by the narrowest margin, behind a time of 2:09.98.

Other winners included Adam Pine in the 100 fly (53.51), Stephanie Rice in the 400 free (4:14.26), Adam Lucas in the 200 individual medley (2:05.06), Sarah Katsoulis in the 200 breast (2:33.03) and Hayden Stoeckel in the 200 back (2:02.87).
