Wyoming Women Sweep New Mexico In Season Opener

LARAMIE, Wyoming, October 10. The University of Wyoming women’s swimming and diving team opened the dual meet portion of its season last night in winning fashion, sweeping all 14 events on the program to top the University of New Mexico, 162-95.

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming team cruised past Mountain West rival New Mexico, 162-95 Thursday evening in Corbett Pool. The Cowgirls won all 14 swimming events with 10 different Wyoming swimmers winning an individual event.

“The goal tonight was to win every event and New Mexico gave us some great runs,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said. “We knew New Mexico had some great sprinters, but our girls really held their own.”

Senior Claudia Carlson, Junior Emily Ridout and freshman Maria Harutjunjan each won two events to lead the Cowgirls. Carlson won the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:09.28. She also won the 200 individual medley clocking in at 2:09.86. Ridout won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 23.60 and the 100 freestyle at 52.93. Hartutjunjan took home both the 100 and 200 breaststroke crowns. She recorded a time of 1:04.61 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:19.96 in the 200 event.

“Emily had a really great day today and really battled out there,” Johnson said. “Maria swam very well tonight and we are trying to find another event for her.”

Junior Nicole Hlavacek took home the 1,000 freestyle with a mark of 10:36.62. Junior Emily Stucky took the title in the 200 freestyle with time of 1:55.17. Junior Keara Chang swam an impressive race in the 500 freestyle taking the event with a time of 5:12.76. Chang’s time was six seconds faster than second place.

Sophomore Abby Sullivan won the 100 backstroke at 57.76 edging out senior Jordan Denny. Freshman Kelly Sheldon won her first career event in the 200 backstroke clocking in at 2:06.39. Junior Molly Coonce won the 100 butterfly at 56.53.

The Cowgirls’ 200 medley relay team of Denny, Harutjunjan, Coonce and Ridout cruised to a win to open the dual clocking in with a time of 1:44.56. Wyoming pulled off a win in the 200 freestyle with the quartet of Ridout, Danielle Badger, Melanie McDonough and Stucky winning the race with a time of 1:35.80.

The Wyoming divers host the Wyoming Diving Invite Friday and Saturday. The Cowboy and Cowgirl Swimmers will participate in the Denver University Relays on Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team fell to Wyoming yesterday evening after their first meet of the 2014-15 season with a total score of 162-95.

The 200-yard medley relay was the first out of 14 events held for the day. UNM kicked off the meet with the team of Kaela McKee, Kristin Walker, Samantha Moss and Morgin Ginnis who finished the race with a time of 1:46.04 for second place.

First year swimmer, Celine Bertrand, took two out of three third place finishes for New Mexico as she finished the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:02.49 and 200-yard butterfly at 2:11.29. Anna Lengyel came in for second in the same race clocking in at 2:09.50. Ginnis made for the second third place finish when she touched the wall at 24.29 in the 50-yard freestyle and Fanni Pataki finished just before her to take second place with a time of 24.23.

Pataki further added to New Mexico’s score as she took fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.02. The Lobos also saw fourth place finishes after McKee raced the 100-yard backstroke in 58.60 seconds and Lindsey Englestead finished the 100-yard breastroke with a time of 1:07.64. Walker completed the same race with a time of 1:05.98 for second place.

New Mexico went on to have an interesting streak as they took six events with a second through fourth place sweep against Wyoming.

They started the pattern off in the 100-yard freestyle as Pataki, Ginnis and Amelie Braul finished with times of 53.17, 53.93 and 54.14, respectively. The trend continued to the 200-yard backstroke with Caitlin Gardiner, McKee and Amber Amr touching the wall in the following order of times: 2:07.48, 2:10.65 and 2:16.85.

The 200-yard breaststroke, 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly followed.

Englestead, Walker and McGill took second, third, and fourth place in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:26.35, 2:26.88 and 2:31.35, respectively.

The 500-yard freestyle was swam by Lengyel, Sarah Weihe and Taylor McGregor who came in an order of 5:18.57, 5:26.90 and 5:33.16.

Sophomore Abigail Wheeler took second place in the 100-yard butterfly clocking in at 57.75 while seniors Samantha Moss came in shortly after for third at 58.74 and Ana Welchert for fourth at 1:03.38.

The Lobo athletes pushed on towards their final second through fourth place finishes in the 200-yard IM as Wheeler, Bertrand and Emily McGill swam at times of 2:13.51, 2:15.36, and 2:17.30.

New Mexico concluded the meet with the 200-yard freestyle relay where Pataki, Ginnis, Braul and Shayla King took second place with a time of 1:35.90. The team of Anna Lilliestrom, Madi Burns, Amr and Weihe finished for third at 1:39.50.

It will be a long week of competition for the Lobos as they will start up again today heading to Greeley, Colo. to take on Northern Colorado at 5:00 p.m.
