World University Games, Water Polo: Men’s Preliminary Competition Continues

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 5. ANOTHER day of preliminary competition is in the books for the men's water polo draw at the World University Games held in Belgrade.

Croatia stomped France, 17-6, to open the day. Bojan Car and Ivan Bebic each posted a hat trick for Croatia, which went 17-for-38. Quentin van der Meulen and Romain Harrissart each connected for two goals for France. The French went 6-for-17 in the match.

Montenegro doubled up Canada, 14-7. Darko Brguljan tallied four goals for Montenegro, which went 14-for-41. Mathew Venner and John Kaukinen accounted for Canada's goals with 4 and 3 each. Canada went 7-for-17 from the field.

Australia edged Greece, 7-5. Stephen Cody and Robert Maitland led the way for the Aussies with two goals each. Australia went 7-for-25. Ioannis Kocheilas and Georgios Katsoulakis also had two goals each for Greece, which went 5-for-22.

Italy smashed China, 27-3. Marco Ferrone paced Italy with five goals. Italy wound up going 27-for-40 from the field. Li Dan notched two goals for China, which went 3-for-15.

Spain clipped Russia, 8-7. Francisco Fernandez Miranda tallied a hat trick for Spain, which went 8-for-25. Viktor Vishnyakov totaled three goals himself for Russia, which converted 7 of 24 shots.

In another close contest, Hungary downed the U.S., 9-8. Mark Kallay, Gabor Hegedus and Erik Bundschuh collected two goals each. Hungary went 9-for-33. Zachary Monsees and Shea buckner tallied two goals each for the U.S., which went 8-for-33.

Japan topped Poland, 18-5. Koji Takei notched five goals for Japan, which went 18-for-36. Jakub Krzysztof Bednarek and Wojciech Leszek each connected for two goals. Poland went 5-for-19 from the field.

Serbia smashed Mexico, 15-2, to complete the day. Every Serbian player that took a shot scored a goal as the squad went 15-for-39. Rainer Schmidt accounted for both of Mexico's goals, as the team went 2-for-14.
