MANCHESTER, England, April 9. MARY DeScenza of the United States down both the American record and meet record to win the women's 200 fly at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

DeScenza, who stood fourth at the halfway mark, used superior backhalf speed to finish in 2:04.27. She surpassed the oldest American short course meter record on the books previously held by Mary T. Meagher with a 2:05.65 since 1981. She also broke Jessicah Schipper's meet record of 2:05.11 set in 2006.

DeScenza also returned the title to the States after a brief stay in Australia at the hands of Schipper. Kaitlin Sandeno won the title back in 2004 with a time of 2:06.95. DeScenza, ironically, was second in the race with a 2:07.79.

"I'm so excited, I feel very emotional about [breaking the oldest record in the American SCM books]," DeScenza told meet organizers. "When I race I only swim in my lane, I don't consider anything else. I consider only what I can try to control."

Australia's Felicity Galvez placed second in 2:04.90, while Great Britain's Jessica Dickons set a national record with a third-place 2:05.09 to dip under Jemma Lowe's preliminary time of 2:05.67.

Lowe was out under world-record pace at the 100, but paid the price as she could not hold on. She settled for fourth with a 2:05.89.
