MANCHESTER, England, April 11. GIVING the partisan crowd at the MEN Arena something to cheer for, Great Britain's Liam Tancock wiped out the meet and national record in the men's 50 back at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Tancock, out of the first semifinal, clocked a time of 23.41 to nip Neil Walker's 23.42 set back in 2000. He also lowered his national record of 23.64 set during prelims.

U.S. teammates Peter Marshall (23.57) and Randall Bal (23.60) placed second and third, while world-record holder Thomas Rupprath qualified fourth in 23.63.

Australia's Ashley Delaney finished fifth in 23.68, while South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg (23.70), China's Sun Xiaolei (23.73) and Venezuela's Albert Subirats (23.76) earned the rest of the top eight spots.
