World Cup Toronto: Katie Ledecky Looks Dominant in 400 Free Heats, Ahead of McIntosh, Haughey

The 2022 FINA World Cup continued with the first day of its stop in Toronto for the heats of the first day.

In the women’s 400 free, USA’s Katie Ledecky was off to an extremely strong start, touching the wall in 3:56.23. In an anticipated showdown, she was five seconds ahead of Canada’s Summer McIntosh (4:01.11) and six ahead of Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey (4:02.68) in the heats. The finals will likely be closer and faster, but Ledecky looks strong with that morning performance.

In the women’s 50 freestyle, Kasia Wasick took the top seed in 23.75, just ahead of Canada’s Maggie MacNeil (23.95) and Australia’s Madison Wilson (23.98). The final will also feature France’s Beryl Gastaldello, USA’s Erika Brown and Linnea Mack and Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands.

In the men’s 400 free, South Africa’s Matt Sates touched the wall first in 3:42.49, ahead of Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys (3:42.63) and USA’s Kieran Smith (3:42.67).

The 50 backstroke a the World Cup featured a strong performance from the home Canadians as Kylie Masse took the top spot in 26.05, followed by Maggie MacNeil (26.19) and Ingrid Wilm (26.48).

In the men’s 200 backstroke, Poland’s Kacper Stokowski took the top seed in 1:52.18, ahead of USA’s Shaine Casas (1:52.53) and Czech Republic’s Tomas Franta (1:52.90).

In the women’s 200 butterfly at the World Cup, USA’s Hali Flickinger took the top seed in 2:05.45, just ahead of compatriot Kelly Pash (2:05.70) and Canada’s Katerine Savard (2:08.77).

In the men’s 100 fly, USA’s Coleman Stewart was the top qualifier in 50.19, followed by compatriot Trenton Julian (50.34) and Australia’s Matthew Temple (50.48).

Results

In the women’s 200 breaststroke at the World Cup, Canada’s Sydney Pickrem took the top spot in 2:20.60, ahead of USA’s Lilly King (2:22.34) and Annie Lazor (2:22.95).

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, USA’s Reece Whitley took the top seed in 57.08, followed y compatriot Nic Fink (57.40) and Japan’s Yoshiki Yamanaka (57.41).

In the men’s 50 free, Trinidad and Tobago’s Dylan Carter took the top seed in 20.91, ahead of Australia’s Kyle Chalmers (21.34) and USA’s Brooks Curry and Justin Ress, who tied for the third spot (21.35).

In the women’s 100 IM at the World Cup, Sweden’s Louise Hansson was the top qualifier in 58.58, ahead of USA’s Kelly Pash (58.61) and Beata Nelson (58.92).

The men’s 100 IM saw Trenton Julian take the top seed in 52.61, ahead of Shaine Casas (52.78) and Brazil’s Caio Pumputis (52.91).
