MOSCOW, Russia, November 8. THE first day of swimming in the fifth stage of action in the FINA World Cup came to a close in Moscow, Russia.

Women's 800 freestyle slower seeds
Russia's Alena Izosimova led a trio of Russians in the heat with a time of 9:03.56. Larisa Logunova (9:05.14) and Yulia Dubova (9:21.06) took the other two spots in the heat.

Men's 100 freestyle
South Africa's Darian Townsend topped qualifying in 47.49, while Russia's Alexander Sukhorukov took second in 48.13 and South Africa's Lyndon Ferns finished third in 48.21.

Sweden's Stefan Nystrand (48.24), Russia's Danila Izotov (48.43), Estonia's Vladimir Sidorkin (48.66), Russia's Evgeny Lagunov (48.72) and Russia's Andrei Grechin (48.75) rounded out the top eight.

Women's 200 freestyle
Russia's Daria Belyakina paced the preliminary rounds with a time of 1:59.02, while Japan's Haruka Ueda (1:59.04) and Russia's Kira Volodina (1:59.13) made up the top three.

Sweden's Josefin Lillhage (1:59.61), Russia's Victoria Malyutina (1:59.89), New Zealand's Melissa Ingram (2:00.21), Russia's Viktoriya Andreeva (2:00.94) and Russia's Maria Ugolkova (2:01.66) claimed the rest of the transfer spots.

Men's 50 breaststroke
South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh led the way in the sprint breast with a time of 26.50, while Australia's Christian Sprenger (27.36), Brazil's Felipe Silva (27.52) and Russia's Sergey Geybel (27.63) touched second through fourth.

Russia's Stanislav Lakhtyukov (27.85), Ukraine's Igor Borysik (27.85), Russia's Dmitry Komornikov (28.15) and Japan's Ryo Tateishi (28.17) turned in fifth through eighth-place times.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Russia's Valentina Artemyeva touched first in 1:07.71, while Australia's Sally Foster (1:08.45), Russia's Ekaterina Baklakova (1:08.50), Olga Detenyuk (1:08.71) and Australia's Sarah Katsoulis (1:08.71) placed second through fourth.

South Africa's Suzaan van Biljon (1:08.82), Brazil's Tatiane Sakemi (1:09.56) and Russia's Ekaterina Uymenova (1:09.67) completed the top eight.

Men's 400 IM slower seeds
Russia's Igor Akhlyustin finished first in 4:20.52, while compatriots Egor Savchenko (4:23.55) and Dmitry Kozlov (4:25.92) were among the top three.

Women's 100 butterfly
Russia's Maria Ugolkova topped the event in 59.52, while Australia's Marieke Guehrer (59.61), Russia's Anna Kiseleva (59.64) and Japan's Natsuki Akiyama (59.78) captured the middle lanes.

Australia's Amy Smith (1:00.16), Russia's Natalia Sutyagina (1:00.24), South Africa's Mandy Loots (1:00.27) and Singapore's Li Tao (1:00.41) will join them in the finale.

Men's 100 backstroke
Australia's Ashley Delaney (52.65), Japan's Ryosuke Irie (52.66), Russia's Stanislav Donets (53.03) and Evgeny Aleshin (53.13) finished in the top four.

Australia's Robert Hurley (53.15), Russia's Alexander Tarabrin (53.22), Lithuania's Vytautas Janusaitis (53.44) and Russia's Sergey Makov (54.27) took care of the rest of the championship spots.

Women's 50 backstroke
Russia's Kseniya Moskvina (28.13) and Anastasia Zueva (28.32) went 1-2 in the sprint back, while Brazil's Fernanda Alvarenga (28.50) and Fabiola Molina (28.86) were third and fourth.

Singapore's Jia Yi Shana Lim (29.28), Belarus' Iryna Niafedava (29.29), Ukraine's Kseniya Grygorenko (29.31) and Russia's Anna Okolot (29.49) claimed the other transfer spots.

Men's 200 butterfly
Russia's Nikolay Skvortsov led the way with a 1:56.31, while Australia's Chris Wright (1:47.22) and Russia's Maxim Ganikhin (1:57.69) and Alexander Vorobyev (1:59.46) finished second through fourth.

Russia's Iliya Skrydlov (2:00.51), Roman Mihailov (2:00.67), Maxim Kurko (2:00.89) and Sergey Ivanov (2:01.16) will make up a largely Russian finale.

Women's 200 IM
Japan's Tomoya Fukuda placed first in qualifying with a 2:14.32, while Russia's Svetlana Karpeeva (2:15.00), Yana Martynova (2:15.40), Viktoriya Andreeva (2:15.99) and Anna Markova (2:16.14) were among the top five.

South Africa's Mandy Loots (2:16.54) and Russia's Alexandra Musienko (2:16.79) and Olga Shulgina (2:18.08) completed the finals field.

Men's 400 freestyle
Russia's Mikhail Polishchuk (3:45.53) and Vitaliy Romanovich (3:49.42) went 1-2, while Australia's Robert Hurley (3:50.37) and Tunisia's Ous Mellouli (3:50.39) claimed third and fourth.

Russia's Viktor Polyakov (3:50.56), Alexander Selin (3:51.89), Australia's Nicholas Ffrost (3:52.47) and Russia's Iliia Larin (3:52.56) made up the rest of the top eight.

Women's 50 freestyle
Sweden's Therese Alshammar paced the sprint free in 25.08, while Russia's Anastasia Aksenova finished second in 25.09.

Australia's Sally Foster (25.18) and Alice Mills (25.44) finished third and fourth, while Russia's Svetlana Fedulova (25.55) and Australia's Marieke Guehrer (25.55) tied for fifth.

Sweden's Josefin Lillhage (25.57) and Russia's Elena Rimskaya (25.94) took the final transfer spots.

Men's 200 breaststroke
Japan's Kazuki Otsuka placed first in prelims with a time of 2:08.91, while Australia's Christian Sprenger (2:09.32), Russia's Alexey Zinovyev (2:09.50) and Japan's Ryo Tateishi (2:09.54) completed the top four.

Russia's Alexander Ovchinnikov (2:11.68), Ukraine's Igor Borysik (2:11.73), Russia's Mikhail Ermolaev (2:11.96) and Russia's Sergey Gerasimov (2:12.03) finished the top eight.

Men's 100 IM
South Africa's Darian Townsend finished first in the sprint medley with a 53.92, while Russia's Sergey Fesikov took second in 54.30. Lithuania's Vytautas Janusaitis (55.48) and Tunisia's Ous Mellouli (56.09) placed third and fourth.

Japan's Ryosuke Irie (56.22), Russia's Dmitry Kalenov (56.43), Germany's Dimitri Colupaev (56.43) and Russia's Alexei Zatsepin (56.59) collected the final championship spots.

Women's 200 backstroke
Russia's Maria Nikitina topped the event in 2:08.92, while New Zealand's Melissa Ingram qualified second in 2:09.14. Japan's Tomoya Fukuda (2:09.63) and Brazil's Fernanda Alvarenga (2:10.14) touched third and fourth.

Russia's Svetlana Shalagina (2:11.55), Ukraine's Kseniya Grygorenko (2:13.12), Russia's Olga Semenova (2:13.25) and Russia's Alexandra Papusha (2:13.67) comprised the rest of the top eight.

Men's 50 butterfly
Australia's Matt Jaukovic picked up the top seed in the sprint fly with a time of 23.29, while Russia's Nikita Konovalov placed second in 23.46. Japan's Kohei Kawamoto finished third in 23.63, while South Africa's Lyndon Ferns touched fourth in 23.71.

Australia's Chris Wright (23.76), Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin (23.95), Nikolay Skvortsov (24.03) and Alexander Kaluzhskiy (24.12) grabbed the other lanes in finals.
