World Championships: Olympic Silver Medallist Arno Kamminga Withdraws From 200 Breaststroke Semi-Finals

Arno Kamminga has pulled out of the semi-finals of the men’s 200m breaststroke in Budapest.

Kamminga claimed silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze as part of the Netherlands mixed 4x100m medley relay at the Duna Arena.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist progressed from prelims to the semis in 2:10.33 but withdrew on Wednesday afternoon.

In his absence, Olympic champion Zac Stubblety-Cook went 2:06.72 to lead the field by almost two seconds from his closest challenger Anton McKee.

Kamminga though will not be a part of the final in which he won silver in Tokyo as well as at the European Championships at the same Duna Arena last year.

Following his silver in the 100, Kamminga said some in the Netherlands camp had had Covid which reduced some of his energy.

He withdrew from the competition feeling unwell and posted to social media, saying:

“I haven’t felt fit since Saturday, but I’ve always been able to put that aside for my races so far.

“I am actually quite proud that I nevertheless managed to squeeze out two more medals: silver in the 100 metre breaststroke and yesterday with my teammates a beautiful bronze medal in the 4 x 100 mixed relay.”
