Kylie Masse returned from claiming silver over 100m backstroke to set the pace in to the semis in the 50m at Duna Arena.

The Canadian went in the final heat and was some way clear at the head of the field in 27.26 with the USA’s Katherine Berkoff next through in 27.49 and Ingrid Wilm in 27.55.

Regan Smith – winner of the 100 back – was fourth in 27.70 although there was a nervous moment for European record holder Kira Toussaint who was left on the start of the final heat and went through 13th in 28.17.

There’ll be an entirely new podium at the Duna Arena from the one in Gwangju which was made up of Olivia Smoliga, Etiene Medeiros and Daria Vaskina, all three absent from the meet.
