World Championship Berths on the Line as USA Diving Synchronized National Championships Begin in Greensboro

GREENSBORO – Divers with ties to Duke won three of six titles awarded Thursday at the USA Diving Synchronized National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Duke Diving teammates Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C.) punched their tickets to the 2015 FINA World Championships with a victory in mixed gender synchronized 3-meter, while their teammates James Brady (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Aaron Daniels-Freeman (Durham, N.C.) won the 14-18 boys’ synchro platform title. GC Diving teammates Mackenzie Willborn (Flower Mound, Texas), who will be a freshman at Duke University in the fall, and Emily Grund (Keller, Texas) paired together for the 14-18 girls’ 3-meter synchro title.

Also winning titles were Longhorn Aquatics teammates Mark Anderson (Lake Forest, Calif.) and Samantha “Murphy” Bromberg (Bexley, Ohio) in mixed 10-meter platform to qualify for the World Championships; City of Midland teammates Tarrin Gilliland (Liberty Hill, Texas) and Julia Fidanza (Downington, Pa.) in 13 and under girls’ platform; and Kevin Mendez (Lighthouse Point, Fla./PineCrest Diving) and Jordan Rzepka (Solon, Ohio/Cleveland Area Diving) in 13 and under boys’ 3-meter.

Johnston and Windle scored 282.60 points to claim the mixed 3-meter synchro gold and earn a spot on the World Championships team, while Ariel Rittenhouse (Santa Cruz, Calif./Stanford Diving) and Dashiell Enos (Studio City, Calif./University of California) scored 278.40 points to edge Maria Coburn (Austin, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics) and Max Showalter (Oak Park, Ill./Duke Diving) by .12 points for silver.

Anderson and Bromberg also qualified for the World Championships after scoring 304.26 points to win the mixed 10-meter synchro title. Windle and Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson Diving Team) were second with 250.50 points, and Max Flory (Fairfax, Va./ Dominion Dive Club) and Mya Kraeger (Willis, Texas/Team A&M Diving) were third at 240.54.

Willborn and Grund took the girls’ 14-18 3-meter synchro title with 650.70 points over two lists of dives to qualify for the Junior Pan American Championships, while Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Unattached) and Haley Allen (Midland, Texas/City of Midland) were second at 635.64. Nikki Watters (New Albany, Ohio/Ohio State Diving Club) and Grace Cable (Winter Park, Fla./YCF Diving) were third with 596.22 points.

In a close 14-18 boys’ synchro platform event, Brady and Daniels-Freeman scored 301.56 points to claim the gold by 2.04 points. Mission Viejo Nadadores teammates Colten Young (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Matthew Casillas (Orange, Calif.) finished second with 299.52 points, edging Flory and Ben Bramley (Wellesley, Mass./Charles River Diving), who were third at 299.34.

Divers could dive with up to three partners, and Gilliland came away with gold, silver and bronze in the 13-and-under girls’ platform event. She and Fidanza scored 487.80 points for the gold, while Gilliland and Sophia McAfee (San Marino, Calif./Trojan Dive Club) were second with 487.14 points. Gilliland and Remi Edvalson (Saratoga, Calif./Stanford Diving) scored 465.21 points for third.

Mendez and Rzepka won the 13 and under boys’ 3-meter title with 560.76 points, while GC Diving teammates Jackson Miller (Southlake, Texas) and Brady Ruth (Trophy Club, Texas) were second at 544.68. Max Weinrich (Brookeville, Md./Montgomery Dive Club) and Tyler Downs (Ballwin, Mo./Clayton Diving) won bronze with 503.34 points.

The USA Diving Synchronized National Championships continue through Sunday, April 12. Friday’s competition features the 14-18 boys on 3-meter, the 14-18 girls on platform, the 13 and under boys on platform and the 13 and under girls on 3-meter.
