World Anti-Doping Agency Facing Economic Crunch; Could Scale Back Anti-Doping Efforts
LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 18. THE World Anti-Doping Agency is facing a definite economic crunch, according to Inside The Games. WADA is currently looking at a near half-a-million dollar deficit for 2011 ($476,000) after a deficit of $643,000 in 2012. With concerns about WADA's financing mounting, the organization released a report recently threatening that unless funding comes into play, it's efforts against doping will decrease.
“The cash reserves used to cover deficits are depleting,” WADA's report said. “The result of this is that income will have to increase or activities will have to be reduced, since WADA's unallocated cash reserve will not meet deficits beyond the next 30 months.”
Currently, WADA draws its funding from the International Olympic Committee with additional contributions from the federations that make up the IOC. This report is an attempt to look for more revenue from the various stakeholders within the Olympic movement.
