Wolfpack Sweeps Team Titles at NC State Invite

The NC State Wolfpack won both the women’s and men’s team titles at the school’s hosted invitational at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The NC State men dominated the event and put up 2133 points over the three days of competition. Notre Dame finished second with 1593, and Duke was third with 1361. On the women’s side, the Wolfpack came from behind to pass geographic rival North Carolina on the final day of the competition. NC State scored 1938 points, to UNC’s 1845.5 and Duke’s 1561.5.

NC State’s Hannah Moore opened up the final night with her second win of the meet, this one in the 1650 free. She clocked 16:09.65, more than 15 seconds ahead of teammate Rachel Muller, who finished in 16:25.08. Duke’s Verity Abel grabbed third in 16:27.40. On the men’s side, Anton Ipsen of the Wolfpack dominated the mile with a 14:39.63. Teammates Jack McIntyre (15:00.52) and Adam Linker (15:04.78) rounded out the top three.

NC State again picked up the top two spits in the women’s 200 back with senior Alexia Zevnik winning in 1:53.05 and freshman Mackenzie Glover taking second in 1:53.85. UNC’s Hellen Moffitt finished third in 1:54.89. Wolfpack swimmers again picked up each of the top three spots in the men’s 200 back, with Hennessey Stuart winning in 1:41.31 and Coleman Stuart edging Justin Ress for second, 1:42.91 to 1:43.04.

Zevnik was back in the pool for the women’s 100 free, winning easily in 48.08. Tar Heels Caroline Baldwin (48.79) and Sarah Hitchens (48.82) completed the top three, with NC State’s Ky-Lee Perry just behind in 48.83. NC State Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held picked up first in the men’s 100 free in 42.40. Notre Dame’s Tabahn Afrik posted a 43.04 for second, and Tennessee’s Kyle Decoursey finished third in 43.14.

NC State’s Kayla Brumbaum dominated the women’s 200 breast in 2:09.89. Finishing well back in second and third were UNC’s Abby Fisher (2:14.07) and Notre Dame’s Meaghan O’Donnell (2:14.22). NC State’s winning streak came to an end in the men’s 200 breast as Air Force’s Kevin Fanter picked up the win in 1:56.85. Duke’s Judd Howard was the runner-up in 1:57.90, just ahead of UNC’s Craig Emslie (1:57.98).

UNC’s Sarah Koucheki earned top honors in the women’s 200 fly, posting a 1:55.84. Duke’s Isa Paez edged out Moffitt for second, 1:56.61 to 1:56.84. Notre Dame’s Matt Grauslys then crushed the field in the men’s 200 fly by more than three seconds, coming in at 1:44.29. UNC’s Michael Meyer came in second at 1:47.34, and Notre Dame’s Kevin Bradley was third in 1:48.02.

In platform diving, UNC’s Elissa Dawson edged Tennessee’s Rachel Rubadoe 261.55-255.10. Duke’s Mary Ellen Targonski finished third with 246.80. For the men, Virginia’s Ian Shelton won with a score of 326.80, followed by UNC’s James Brady (321.00) and Duke’s Evan Moretti (311.65).

NC State dominated the meet-ending 400 free relays. Zevnik, Perry, Krista Duffield and Courtney Caldwell took first in the women’s race at 3:13.35, well ahead of Duke (3:16.69) and North Carolina (3:16.81). In the men’s event, Ress, Soeren Dahl, Scott Johnson and Held combined to finish in 2:52.28. Held provided some fireworks on the end with a quick 41.78 split.
