Wisconsin vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona, November 5. THE Arizona State women's swimming team notched an impressive victory over the University of Wisconsin Badgers, Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils defeated a Badger team which finished 11th in the nation last season at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Despite the men narrowly falling short to UW, the Sun Devil men battled the Badgers at one point trailing Wisconsin 93-92 with a handful of races left to swim. The ASU women defeated Wisconsin 174-104, while the men fell to the Badgers.

Although the meet had already been decided by the time the women's 200 free relay competed, the event proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day. The Arizona State ‘A' relay of Shannon Landgrebe, Caroline Kuczynski, Cassie Morrice and Penelope Yamauchi touched in 100th of a second faster than the Wisconsin ‘A' relay with a time of 1:34.76 to UW's 1:34.77. Yamauchi's relay-fast leg of 23.44 sealed the victory for the Sun Devils.

In the women's 100 backstroke, the ASU duo of Kelli Kyle and Lizzy Luttrell finished one and two for the Sun Devils touching in with times of 56.64 and 57.07, respectively.

In the women's 400 medley relay, the ASU ‘A' relay of Kyle, Rebecca Ejdervik, Kuczynski, and Landgrebe were just two hundredths of a second shy of recording an NCAA B standard time in the event.

On the men's side, sophomore Hayden Thomas dominated the men's 1000 free, recording a time of 9:40.77. Thomas' time was over seven seconds faster than Wisconsin's second-place finisher. Herbie Behm also shined on the day, taking first in the men's 50 free. Behm touched in with a time of 20.94 in the free sprint, just several tenths of a second shy of the NCAA B standard.
In diving, both the ASU men and women competed alone as Wisconsin did not travel divers. Senior Elina Eggers took first place in the women's 1-meter springboard for the second-straight week. Eggers, who scored a total of 305.90 in event, has already qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships with her score from the previous meet.

Similarly on the men's side, senior Constantin Blaha also took the top spot in the men's 1-meter with a score of 356.70. Like Eggers, Blaha has also qualified for Zone E's the previous week with a score above 300. Additionally, senior Cameron Bradshaw also qualified for NCAA Zone E Championships with a score of 325.95.

Next up, the Sun Devils host UCLA and USC, Nov. 11-12 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
