Wisconsin Men’s Swimming Tops Minnesota For First Time In Over A Decade; Minnesota Women Make It A Split

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, October 17. The Wisconsin men’s swimming and diving team defeated conference rival Minnesota for the first time in more than a decade Friday night, topping the Gophers by a score of 153.5-146.5. The Minnesota women came out ahead by a 203-95 score to split the dual meet.

Badgers Brett Pinfold, Drew Teduits, Matthew Hutchins and Nick Schafer led the way for Wisconsin with two individual wins apiece. Pinfold topped the men’s 100 free (45.42) and 200 free (1:39.34), while Teduits won the 200 back (1:46.71) and 200 IM (1:50.18). Hutchins swept the distance freestyle events with wins in the 500 free (4:24.81) and 1000 free (9:07.66). Schafer won both men’s breaststroke events, posting a 56.17 in the 100 and a 2:02.17 in the 200. Nicholas Caldwell picked up the other win for Wisconsin in the 200 fly (1:48.85).

Minnesota’s Daryl Turner picked up a trio of wins tonight, the only individual wins in swimming events for Minnesota, touching first in the 50 free (20.58), 100 back (48.54) and 100 fly (49.09). Diver Matt Barnard (1-meter, 357.90 and 3-meter 371.63) won the other two individual events for Minnesota, while Minnesota’s 200 free relay touched first in 1:21.60.

Ivy Martin led the way for the Wisconsin women with two individual wins in the sprint freestyle events. Martin touched in 22.31 in the 50 free, just off her season-best 22.23 from last weekend’s dual meet against Arizona State. She also won the 100 free in 49.54, slightly off her season-best of 49.24.

Minnesota’s Brooke Zeiger led the Gophers with three individual wins in the 100 back (56.37), 200 back (1:58.92) and 200 IM (2:01.78), while teammates Kiera Janzen and Kierra Smith each posted two wins. Janzen swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 free in 4:50.54 and topping the 1000 free in 9:52.90. Smith added two wins for the Gophers in the 100 breast (1:01.48) and 200 breast (2:09.49); her 200 breast time is now the fastest in the country as Tennessee’s Molly Hannis had the previous best at 2:11.21.

Minnesota also got wins from Lauren Votava (200 free, 1:48.49), Becca Weiland (100 fly, 53.60), Danielle Nack (200 fly, 2:00.98), Jessica Ramberg (1-meter diving, 304.88) and Zhou Yu (3-meter diving, 372.23). The Gophers topped both the 200 free relay (1:32.26) and 400 medley relay (3:40.88).
