Winter Juniors-East: Summer McIntosh Stars Again, Kaii Winkler Sets NAG During Fast Prelims Session

Another night of fast performances is on the horizon at the Winter Juniors Championships-East, which are being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Final-day preliminaries suggest several more National Age Group standards will be under fire, and one mark even went down during the a.m. session.

Just weeks after he set an NAG in the 15-16 class in the 100-yard freestyle, Kaii Winkler took his record even lower with a swim of 42.21. That time was faster than the 42.52 he managed at the Florida State Championships.

Here is a complete look at what unfolded during Saturday morning’s prelims session.

Results

Girls’ 200 Backstroke

Canadian star Summer McIntosh, demonstrating her versatility, easily clocked the fastest swim of the morning, as she cruised through her heat in 1:52.37. Across all of her events this week, McIntosh has dropped considerable time from the morning to the night, which means a sub-1:50 outing is certainly in the mix for finals. McIntosh was followed by 14-year-old Charlotte Crush, who went 1:53.27 and is carrying momentum from a 13-14 NAG in the 100 backstroke from Friday night.

Boys’ 200 Butterfly

As expected, Thomas Heilman grabbed the top seed for the final, going 1:42.06 to place ahead of Gibson Holmes (1:44.53). The 15-year-old Heilman should make a run at the NAG (15-16) during finals, with that mark sitting at 1:40.91. The way Heilman has performed during the meet, including a 44.67 effort in the 100 butterfly, suggests a run at sub-1:40 is possible.
