William & Mary Cuts Diving, Moves Resources to Swimming

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia, May 17. AS part of an effort to strengthen the Tribe's swimming program, the College of William and Mary Athletics Department announced today that it will suspend diving and shift those resources to swimming.

The suspension will enable the program's staff to have an increased emphasis on both the men and women's swimming programs that have experienced an unprecedented run of success over the last decade. The Tribe had just one diver slated to return for the 2011-12 season.

"Working closely with the program's coaching staff, we took a long look at the available resources and made the difficult decision that a shift towards improving our swimming teams was the best course," said William and Mary Athletics Director, Terry Driscoll. "The suspension of diving will allow us to positively impact the over 50 male and female student-athletes competing in our swimming program."

The move will take effect immediately.

"I am excited about what benefits this decision will bring to the current and future generations of William and Mary swimmers," said Matt Crispino , a 2002 graduate of the College and director of swimming and diving. "Our program has made significant leaps forward in recent years and this shift in resources will allow us to continue that trend and better support our goal of becoming one of the elite swimming destinations in our conference, and beyond."

Since Crispino has returned to the pool deck at the helm of the Tribe program for the 2007-08 season, the men and women's teams have combined to break 31 of the College's 38 total swimming event records (15 for women, 16 for men). The most recent CAA Championship meet saw the Tribe men and women produce 16 school records and 116 lifetime best swims. Additionally, the College has been represented at the NCAA Championship by at least one individual in three of the last four years.
