Will Licon Sets Meet Record During Prelims at Big 12s

AUSTIN – Will Licon set a meet record during prelims of the Big 12 Championships this morning as Texas continued to roll.

Women’s Meet

500 free

Texas’ Kaitlin Pawlowicz hit the wall in 4:43.90 to easily post the top time of the morning, while teammate Kelsey Leneave claimed second overall in 4:45.28.

Texas also claimed two other A final times with Sammie Hashbarger (4:52.37) and Smacker Miles (4:53.00) placing fifth and sixth.

The top non-Longhorn swim came by way of Emma Skelley with a third-place 4:50.11.

200 IM

Madisyn Cox topped the event for Texas with a 1:56.16, that nearly put her in the top 10 all time at Texas.

Skylar Smith took second for Texas with a 1:59.27, while Jordan Surhoff (1:59.51) and Tasija Karosas (1:59.70) also made it into the A final for Texas.

Iowa State’s Kasey Roberts was the top non-Texas swimmer with a fifth-place 2:00.29.

50 free

Texas went 1-2 in the women’s splash-and-dash as Gretchen Jaques touched in 22.48.  Rebecca Millard placed second in 22.74.

TCU’s Julia Sanders (22.85) claimed third in 22.85 with Texas’ Brynne Wong earning fourth in 22.94.

Men’s Meet

500 free

Texas’ Clark Smith, already with a 4:13 this year from the Texas Invite to secure his NCAA A cut, cruised to the top seed in 4:16.71.

The top four A final spots all went to Longhorns with Sam Lewis (4:18.17), Jonathan Roberts (4:18.71) and Jake Ritters (4:19.56) making it back to the big final tonight.

Nic Munoz (4:21.15) and PJ Dunne (4:24.17) were part of the Texas B team just swimming for their NCAA B cuts, but are not eligible for the A final.

TCU’s Thor Stenfjord, who took eight with a 4:24.83, was the top non-Texas swimmer of the morning.

200 IM

Texas’ Will Licon posted a meet record in the 200-yard IM with a 1:43.20 this morning.  That broke Austin Surhoff’s previous meet mark of 1:43.26 from back in 2010.

Joseph Schooling (1:44.42) and John Martens (1:46.58) went 2-3 for Texas, while Texas B teamer Jared Butler took fourth in 1:46.85.

Nate Carr of West Virginia was the top non-Texas swimmer with a fifth-place 1:46.99.

50 free

West Virginia’s Tim Squires stopped the complete Texas steamroll with a 19.50 to lead qualifying in the 50 free.

Texas’ Tripp Cooper (19.72), John Murray (19.75) and Brett Ringgold (19.89) all broke 20 seconds to place 2-3-4 this morning.
