VANCOUVER — The UBC swim team is pleased to announce two new recruits. Will Brothers will join the program in January after transferring from the University of Victoria, while Heather Lam has committed to the Thunderbirds beginning in the fall of 2015.

Brothers, is a member of the Canadian National team, having represented Canada the 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, and 2013 FINA World Championships. His speciality is the 1,500-metre freestyle. The 20-year-old previously swam for Victoria, but will transfer to UBC to join the Thunderbirds and be a part of the National High Performance Centre in Vancouver. While he won’t compete at the upcoming Canada West Championships, he will be able to qualify for the CIS Championships as long as he meets the qualifying standards in the new year as a member of the Thunderbirds.

“I am super excited to come represent UBC both on the varsity stage and hopefully internationally,” said Brothers, “Victoria has been great to me and I’ve had a great time working with the staff and swimmers here but i feel like UBC is the right place for me both athletically and academically. I really respect the program there and I think it’ll be a great fit for me. I’m looking forward to adding my skill set to the best varsity team in the country at the CIS level and representing the High Performance Centre Vancouver at the National Championships.”

“Having a swimmer of the quality of Will Brothers joining us mid season is a huge boost to our men’s team quest of challenging for the CIS Championship in February,” said UBC head coach Steve Price. “He can cover off middle to distance free along with the individual medley events. Not only is he great young man, but he brings international experience competing at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships the last two seasons. The guys are very exited to have Will join the Thunderbirds and he will fit in immediately.”

Lam currently swims for the Vancouver Pacific Swim Club at UBC. Specializing in the 50m and 100m freestyle, Lam is a member of the Canadian Junior National Team and recently represented her country at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii. She will join the program in the fall of 2015.

“As our first recruit to commit to UBC for next season, Heather is a local girl who worked her way up through the ranks of the Vancouver Pacific Swim Club; our sister team here at UBC,” said Price. “She’s competed for the Junior National Team the past two seasons and qualified for the finals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in August. She is a sprint and middle distance specialist in freestyle and backstroke where she will have an immediate impact with four of our seniors graduating. Heather will bring a great spirit and competitive drive to the women’s team.”

“UBC is a place where I can grow as an individual knowing that I have incredible support from my coaches and teammates,” said Lam. “Pursuing my academic and swimming aspirations will be best achieved at UBC. Being around the team has given me a sense of community, that I can’t wait to be a part of and call my home for the next five years. Swimming with VPSC has allowed me to become the swimmer I am today. They have prepared me with the skills needed for me to move onto the next level of competitive swimming and I am confident that I am making the right choice in coming to UBC next year. ”

Both the men’s and women’s programs are set to defend their Canada West titles at the conference championships in Lethbridge beginning November 21, 2014.
