Whitman vs. Lewis and Clark

PORTLAND, Oregon, November 12. THE Lewis & Clark men's and women's swim teams put on a performance at the Zehntbauer Swim Pavilion on Friday night hosting the Whitman Missionaries in a Northwest Conference meet. The women's team defeated the Missionaries 128-77, while the men's team fell 136-66.

The Pioneers picked up 11 first place finishes, including two each from Rachel Cazden, Claire Jordan and Shuichi Matsumoto.

Cazden's first top finish came in the women's 50-freestyle where she came in with a 24.91. Freshman Kayla Ernwein made her swimming debut in the event, finishing in third place followed by Hannah Frank in fourth.

The 100-backstroke went to Cazden as well who finished in just over a minute (1:01.18). Taylor Coiner was the next Pio to finish taking home third place. Coiner also took part in the 200-freesyle where she finished in second place with a time of 2:02.67.

Cazden and Frank teamed up with Gail Wilcoxen and Susie Trexler in the 200-free relay where the Pioneers pulled out a first place finish with a PR of 1:42.99. Trexler picked up an individual win in the 100-free with a time of 56.72.

Jordan began her night with a first place finish in the 1,000-freestyle, followed by freshman Lesley Pfeiffer. In the 500-free Jordan once again finished on top with a time of 5:27.13. Freshman Alli Rotunno had solid performance with a victory in the 100-breaststroke where she came in with a time of 1:12.31.

The women's 400-Individual Medley was all Lewis & Clark with the Pioneers taking the top-three spots. Freshman Katy Yeh earned a first place finish in the event with a time of 4:56.48, while Cat Menkel-Lawrence and Heather Markham finished in second and third respectively.

On the men's side, Matsumoto set a PR in the 50-free with a time of 22.15, followed up with a top place in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:02.14. Matsumoto was also a part of the 200-medley relay team that took home a first place finish. Steven Carreno led off the event, followed by Matsumoto, Chris Moon and Noah Boring.

Boring began his night with a second place finish in the 100-free with a time of 51.58. Moon, a freshman, finished the 100-butterfly with a third place finish with a time of 58.49. Carreno picked up a third place finish in the 100-backstroke with a time of 59.59. Josh Spegman placed third for the Pios in the 500-free.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10:30 a.m. when they host the Whitworth Pirates.
