Westminster Women Capture 2004 PAC Swimming Championships; WC Men Finish Second

NEW WILMINGTON, Penn, February 15. THE Westminster College women's swimming team captured its second consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Swimming & Diving Championship tonight at Grove City College, while the Titan men finished second out of four teams at the conclusion of the three-day event.

In women's action, Westminster finished with 798 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (751), the host Lady Wolverines (707), and Bethany (98). Grove City captured the team crown on the men's side with 799 points, followed by the Titans (716), W&J (601) and Bethany (306).

Westminster received a pair of awards following the meet. Freshman Ryan Trunk (Brookline, MA/Cheshire Academy H.S.) (photo attached) was named PAC Men's Swimmer of the Year and tied for Most Points Scored at the invitational. In addition, Westminster head coach Rob Klamut was tabbed as Women's Coach of the Year in both the conference and for the invitational.

Three Lady Titans posted individual wins on the third and final day of competition. Sophomore Megan Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana H.S.) placed first in the 200 backstroke in a conference-record time of 2:12.91. Freshman Sara Bonchosky (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands H.S.) captured the 100 freestyle in 54.46, while classmate Emily Staniszewski (Pittsburgh/South Park H.S.) touched first in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.65). The Lady Titans also captured the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.90).

Three Titan men were victorious in individual events on Saturday. Sophomore Andy Hudak (Berea, OH/Berea H.S.) captured the 200 breaststroke (2:11.84), while Trunk won the 100 freestyle (46.84) and classmate Pat Smith (South Park/South Park H.S.) was victorious in the 200 backstroke (1:59.59). The Titans also touched first in the 400 freestyle (3:13.34) relay.

The Westminster swimming teams return to action next Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Case Western Reserve University Veale Classic in Cleveland, Ohio at 10 a.m. It will be the final opportunity for Westminster swimmers to attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships.
