On the sixth night of action, Lochte was the headliner performer for the United States, even overshadowing Michael Phelps. En route to the gold medal in the 200 backstroke, Lochte set a world record of 1:54.32 and ended the seven-year unbeaten streak of teammate Aaron Peirsol. He later teamed with Phelps, Klete Keller and Vanderkaay for a world record in the 800 freestyle relay, as the American squad was timed in 7:03.24.
