Washington State, UC Davis vs. Nevada

RENO, Nevada, November 1. THE University of Nevada swimming and diving team split its home double dual today at Lombardi Pool on the Reno campus with Washington State and UC Davis. The Wolf Pack defeated UCD 157-105 but fell 136-126 to WSU. WSU scored a 184-78 victory over UCD to go 2-0 on the day.

After trailing WSU most of the way Nevada held a 124-121 lead heading into the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the day. The Pack's squad of sophomore Marichi Gandionco (Quezon City, Philippines), senior Stephanie Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.), senior JayDee Huppert (Billings, Mont.) and senior Courtney Eads (Upland, Calif.) finished behind both the Washington State "A" and "B" relays that went one, two as the Cougars rallied for the 136-126 victory. Nevada was also behind the UCD "A" squad but held a comfortable lead over the Aggies heading into the final event.

Eads, senior Kim Kabesh (Viking, Alberta, Canada) and junior Margaret Doolittle (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Pack with a pair of wins each. Eads won both long distance events placing first in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle with times of 5:06.44 and 10:25.25 respectively. Eads swam 2:09.04 in the 200-yard IM to finish behind Heidi Kucera of UCD who won the event and teammate Summer Halwas-Morgan (Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) who swam 2:08.75. Halwas-Morgan added another second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke completing the distance in time of 2:23.86.

Doolittle captured the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.28 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.75. She also took third in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.63 finishing behind a pair of WSU swimmers. Kabesh was victorious in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events swimming 56.68 and 2:04.23 respectively.

Sophomore Jeanette Tour (Stockholm, Sweden) won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:06.55 and placed second behind WSU's Rugile Mileisyte in the 100-yard backstroke posting a time of 58.95.

Gandionco also had a fine day in the pool taking third in the 200-yard butterfly behind Kabesh and a WSU swimmer with a time of 2:08.98. She also took third in the 100-yard butterfly behind the same two swimmers. In the 200-yard freestyle she was the Pack's top swimmer finishing behind two WSU and two UCD swimmers with a time of 1:56.76.

Miranda More, a junior from Spokane, Wash. swam 5:15.99 in the 500-yard freestyle which placed her behind Eads, and swimmer from WSU and UCD. Freshman Chelsey Larson (Sparks, Nev.) swam 10:58.42 in the 1000-yard freestyle placing behind Eads, two WSU swimmers and one from UCD. Another of the Pack's freshman Melissa Chandless (Mercer Island, Wash.) swam 2:33.45 in the 200-yard breaststroke which was fifth overall behind a swimmer from UCD, Halwas-Morgan and two WSU competitors.

In the first event of the day Tour, Doolittle, Kabesh and Huppert combined to swim 3:53.12 in the 400-yard medley relay to place second overall behind the WSU squad.

Nevada's next competition is a Nike Cup in Long Beach, Calif. Nov. 20-22.
