Washington College Swimming Sweeps Salisbury

SALISBURY – The Washington College swimming programs swept Salisbury with wins in the men’s (136-67) and women’s (130-75) meets in a mid-week contest.

Visiting Washington College cruised to its 28th consecutive win over host Salisbury University, 130-75, in non-conference women’s swimming action this evening. The Shorewomen evened their 2014-15 record at 1-1 with the win, while the Sea Gulls dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

Freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) each won two individual events for Washington. Clune was first in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.57 and in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:21.35. Maxwell took the 200-meter individual medley in 2:32.08 and the 800-meter freestyle in 9:53.33. Maxwell was also second in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:44.86.

Freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) won the 50-meter freestyle in 29.24 and placed second in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:03.05. Freshman Joelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:09.57 and led off the winning 200-meter freestyle relay team as she teamed with freshman Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), freshman Ali Sanders (Dover, Del./Milford), and senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington)to take first in 1:57.38.

Howard was also second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:17.87. Junior Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) added a second-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle in 10:25.35, sophomore Megan Obarowski (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) was second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:37.07, and freshman Tricia Liller (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:22.60.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with their home opener, a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet against Gettysburg.

The Washington College men’s swim team won nine of 11 events en route to a 136-67 non-conference win over host Salisbury University this evening. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 on the season and 23-2 all-time against their Eastern Shore rivals. The Sea Gulls fell to 0-4 with the loss.

Senior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) each won two individual events for the Shoremen. Yocum won the 200-meter freestyle in a pool-record 1:59.33 and the 100-meter freestyle in 54.45. Hochstein took the 200-meter individual medley in 2:20.13 and the 400-meter freestyle in 4:30.29.

Freshman Finny Dorsch (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield), sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), and freshman Kevin Mackenzie(Silver Spring, Md./St. John’s College H.S. [D.C.]) each won one individual and took second in another. Dorsch won the 800-meter freestyle in 9:21.12 and was second in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:31.23, Elliott won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.66 and was second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:04.36, and Mackenzie won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:09.41 and was second in the 50-meter freestyle in 24.94.

The Shoremen won both relay events as Elliott, Mackenzie, senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and freshman Cody Weiler(Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) captured the 200-meter medley relay in 1:52.77 and Lee, junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), juniorDJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall), and Yocum won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:41.21.

Weiler was also second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:27.93 and in the 100-meter freestyle in 55.70. Lee added a second-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly in 1:01.84, while Logan was second in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:03.12.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their home opener, a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet against Gettysburg. Washington will bring an 11-meet dual-meet win streak into that meet. The Shoremen’s last dual-meet lose came at the hands of Gettysburg in last season’s opener.

The Salisbury University men’s and women’s swimming teams competed Wednesday night against Washington (Md.) College at Maggs Physical Activities Center, as the men dropped a 136-67 decision and the women fell 130-75.

Men

The men’s squad was led by sophomore Okan Eyigor and junior Will Gough, as both claimed top finishes in one of their races. Eyigor notched his top finish in the 100-meter butterfly, recording nine points on a time of 1:01.48. The Istanbul, Turkey native was trailing in the final 50-meter stretch, but made a late push in the last lap to take a fingertip victory and defeat Shoreman Greg Lee by .36 of a second. Eyigor concluded the meet with 14 points in his individual races, finishing fourth in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 100-meter backstroke.

Gough claimed his top finish in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing on a time of 24.66 seconds for nine points. In a race that consisted of swimming two stretches of the pool, the junior separated enough from the second-place finisher by .48 of a second. The Ellicott City, Maryland native competed alongside teammate Eyigor in the 100 fly, finishing third on a time of 1:02.75 for three points, concluding the meet with 12 points in individual races.

In the 100-meter breaststroke, freshman Vincent Carraccio (1:14.95), sophomore Kevin Drury (1:18.97) and freshman Conor Johnston (1:19.28) claimed the second through fourth spots, in that order, racing for nine points combined.

Women

The women’s team notched four first-place finishes on the evening, with sophomores Layne Gable and Victoria Radcliffe leading the Gulls.

In the 100-meter butterfly, Gable swam to a first-place finish in a time of 1:11.03 and finishing right behind her in second was sophomore Nicole Marders, touching the wall just over a second after Gable at 1:12.07.

The 400-meter freestyle race had a spectacular finish, with Radcliffe coming out on top after a neck-and-neck battle with lane three through nine laps. Radcliffe fell behind in the race, but fought back on the 11th lap to take the final lead, touching the wall at 4:44.66, just .2 seconds faster than the swimmer in lane three.

Radcliffe and Gable were also a part of the victory in the 200-meter medley relay, along with juniors Nicki Schult and Kathryn Adams, collectively marking a time of 2:14.57.

Radcliffe also swam to a first-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle in a time of 2:15.90.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday, November 8 when they take on Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
