Wade Flemons Inducted Into Hollyburn Swimming Hall of Fame

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada, September 30. ON Saturday September 26th the Hollyburn Hurricanes Swim Team hosted their first annual Celebration of Swimming Event. This event was created to celebrate the accomplishments of members and past members of the Hollyburn Country Club who have contributed to competitive swimming at the club itself and the swimming community as a whole.

This night marked the beginning of the Hollyburn Swimming Hall of Fame. The first athlete inducted was Canadian Olympian and National Team star Wade Flemons. Flemons swam at the Hollyburn Country Club from 1967-1974 (7-14 years of age) where he was a top ranked age group swimmer and held several age group records.

Flemons went on to represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, World Championships and was on the 1980 Olympic Team. He was also a standout at Standford University where he won the NCAA Division I Championship title in 1981.

For his accomplishments at Stanford Flemons will be inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame later this year joining the likes of John Elway, Jim Plunkett, John McEnroe and Tom Watson.

"Swimming taught me many lessons that I carried over to school and life in general," explained Flemons. "I remember being ten years old and finally getting the fact that if I tried hard in practice I would do well in swim meets."

"I also finally got this in school as well, the more attention I paid and the harder I tried the better I did. Now it seems like an easy concept, but I only learned that from swimming."

Flemons had many great messages for young swimmers and their parents, "You can make anything possible with fun and hard work. I had friends that did not seem to have much talent at a young age. Some had success as age groupers and some had very little success at a young age. They were swimming just to have fun."

"Later on, because they wanted to become very good swimmers so badly they worked harder than anyone else, they made it happen and became among the top swimmers in the world."

Flemons was inducted by Bruce Berger another former National Team member. Also attending the event were many notable names in the Canadian Swimming community such as Leslie Cliff, Cam Henning, Graham Welbourne, Blake Worsley and Doug Perks.

Other inductees were Coach Michael Geddes who built a strong tradition of swimming in the club during the 1960s and 70s laying the foundation for many years of great success by the team during that time. Builder Diane Philips who is in charge of the lesson program at the club has been an integral part of helping build the current team which has gone from 45 swimmers to over 100 swimmers in the last two years.
