VMI vs. Davidson

DAVIDSON, North Carolina, January 28. SOPHOMORE Wills Cooper and junior Meagan Madden won a pair of titles to lead the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team to a pair of dual-meet victories over the VMI Keydets in CCSA competition Friday night at Cannon Natatorium.

Cooper won the 50 free and the 100 free to lead the Wildcat men to a 121-89 victory, and Madden took the individual title in both the 1000 free and 200 back to lead the Davidson women to a 109-47. Reigning CCSA Divers of the Week Kaliya Burton-Akright and Brian McRae swept the diving events, each with a pair of season-best scores, and the Wildcats won all but the final even contested.

Davidson swept the 200 medley relays to kick off the meet, with the women's team of seniors Anna Stringfield, Ineke Stegger, Emily Castle and Lindsey Martin swimming a winning-time of 1:48.26 and the men's team of junior Geoffrey Peitz, sophomore Drew Onken, junior Joe Burquist and senior Bryan Droll winning in 1:35.45.

Madden picked up her first title with a winning time of 11:28.11 in the 1000 free, and freshman Drew Gustavson won the men's event with a time of 10:37.88.

Freshman Ethan Levinson won the 200 freestyle, which was not contested on the women's side, with a personal season-best time of 1:47.87, before the Wildcats swept the next event, the 50 freestyle. Senior Jessica Delgehausen won the women's heat with a time of 25.92, and Cooper did the same on the men's side in 21.51.

Junior Lauren Kamperman won the 400 IM with a personal season-best time of 4:41.50, and sophomore Drew Onken finished first in the men's event with a time of 4:03.69.

Burton-Akright won the 1-meter with a score of 276.45 and took the title on the 3-meter with a score of 270.98, and McRae completed the sweep by winning the 1-meter with a score of 276.45 and the 3-meter with a score of 327.

Freshman Will Fox used a lifetime best time of 2:00.37 to win the 200 fly, which was not contested on the women's side, before the Wildcats swept the 100 free. Freshman Caroline Vrana took the title with a time of 56.12, and Cooper won his second individual title with a time of 47.78 in the men's heat.

Madden also picked up her second win of the night behind a first-place time of 2:24.56 in the 200 back, and reigning CCSA Men's Swimmer of the Week Peitz won the men's side with a time of 2:00.35.

Junior Juliana Porter won the 500 free with a time of 5:35.87, and freshman Thomas Bigham swam a lifetime best of 4:57.69 to win the men's 500 free.

Freshman Megan McLeod took the title in the 200 breast with a personal season-best time of 2:35.38, and senior Ben Lucas won the men's event with a personal season-best time of 2:16.28.

The Wildcat women won the team's final event of the evening, as senior McKensie Carr, sophomore Allison Cottle, Madden and junior Casey VanTassell finished first with a time of 1:48.05 in the 200 free relay. On the men's side, VMI picked up its only win of the night, as Chris Dreikhorn, Ian Morales, Sam Halter and Matt Elliott won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.58.

Davidson will conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. dual meet at CCSA-foe Gardner-Webb tomorrow, before turning its attention to the 2011 CCSA Championships.
