Vladimir Morozov Posts Swift Time at Speedo Grand Challenge

The second day of the Speedo Grand Challenge went off from Irvine, California and the crowd saw some good in-season times at the unique meet.

Vladimir Morozov started the morning session with a quick 22.35 to take the top seed for tonight. Morozov leads his Trojan Swim Club teammate Cristian Quintero, who won the 200 free last night. Quintero (23.10), Zach Apple (23.30) and Justin Lynch (23.42) will be in the four person final.

Katie McLaughlin leads the 200 free qualifiers after her 400 free win last night. McLaughlin swam a 2:01.29 to lead Cal teammates Amy Bilquist (2:02.38) and Abbey Weitzeil (2:03.16). Mission Viejo 15-year-old Ella Ristic will be the fourth person in the final with a 2:03.48 swim this morning.

In the men’s 400 IM, 15-year-old Kevin Vargas leads the qualifiers with a 4:28.93. Vargas had the fastest time by over three seconds over Cal’s Ken Takahashi (4:32.04). A pair of 18-year-olds will be the other two swimmers in the final as Texas commit JohnThomas Larson and Cal commit Trenton Julian will also swim in the final tonight.

In the women’s 400 IM, Auburn senior Ashley Neidigh posted a strong swim with a 4:49.14 to lead the field by over seven seconds. Solie Laughlin was second at 4:56.24. 200 IM champ last night Riley Scott was third and Auburn’s Zoe Thatcher was fourth into tonight’s A-final.

The men’s 100 butterfly final will be tight as Auburn’s Luis Martinez posted the top time of the morning with a 53.51 ahead of USC’s Dylan Carter (53.87) and Cal’s Justin Lynch (54.29). Martinez is just off the meet record held by Milorad Cavic and Lynch from two years ago at 53.08.

In the women’s 100 butterfly, Trojan’s Kendyl Stewart led the heats with a 59.19 ahead of Canyon’s Amanda Kendall (59.73). Cal’s Farida Osman and Katie McLaughlin are the other two swimmers in the final as the four will be chasing the meet record held by Canadian Katerine Savard from 2011 at 58.48.

In the women’s 200 back, Pac-12 rivals Emma Schanz of UCLA and Amy Bilquist of Cal swam 2:14’s this morning to lead the qualifiers into tonight’s finals session. Schanz (2:14.59) and Bilquist (2:14.81) lead teenagers Samantha Shelton and Alex Crisera into tonight’s final.

The men’s 400 free final will be the last final of the night as 200 free champ Cristian Quintero swam the fastest time of the morning with a 3:59.22. Auburn’s Russell Noletto was second at 3:59.68 to join Quintero as the only swimmers under 4 minutes. Cal’s Nick Norman (4:01.37) and Ryan Kao (4:01.67) are within striking distance of the top two as they round out the A-final for tonight.
