Virginia Women Break Records During Day One of ACC Championships

ATLANTA — The first night of the 2015 ACC Championships featured some strong swims as the University of Virginia women claimed two new meet and conference records.

The Virginia Tech women lead at the end of day one with 178 points with the University of North Carolina behind them at 158 points. University of Miami rounded out the top three with 150 points.

The night opened with the University of Virginia 200 medley relay team of Courtney Bartholomew (24.26), Laura Simon (26.78), Ellen Williamson (23.38) and Ellen Thomas (21.46) breaking the ACC meet and conference record with a time of 1:35.88.

Louisville’s Tanja Kyllianien (24.88), Andrew Cottrell (26.90), Kelsi Worrell (22.34) and Andrew Kneppers (22.18) claimed second with 1:36.30, and North Carolina State’s Alexia Zevnik (24.65), Kayla Brumbaum (27.79), Ashlyn Koletic (23.41) and Riki Bonnema (21.37) grabbed third with a 1:37.22.

University of North Carolina (1:37.75) and Florida State University (1:37.79) joined the top three with NCAA ‘A’ cuts.

The Cavalier women held nothing back as they continued on their record breaking streak with the 800 freestyle relay. Leah Smith (1:44.61), Hanne Borgersen (1:45.17), Kaitlyn Jones (1:45.21) and Cece Williams (1:45.94) succeeded in lowering both the meet and conference record to 7:00.93.

North Carolina’s Danielle Siverling (1:44.38), Allyn Hardesty (1:45.09), Lauren Earp (1:46.61) and Emma Nunn (1:45.75) snatched second with a 7:01.83. The Louisville relay of Andrew Kneppers (1:45.62), Rachel Grooms (1:47.10), Abbie Houck (1:46.61) and Tanja Kyllianinen (1:46.62) joined them for an NCAA ‘A’ cut posting a time of 7:05.75.

Earlier in the evening Virginia Tech senior Kalyea Arnett took gold in the women’s 3-meter diving with a score of 369.45. University of Miami seniors Thea Vock (354.45) and Cheyenne Cousineau (349.60) placed second and third.

Men’s 1-meter diving also competed tonight with Miami’s Briadam Herrera claiming first with 453.85 points. Teammate Samuel Dorman joined him for second with a score of 404.80, while JB Kolod from Virginia rounded out the top three with a score of 372.90.
