Virginia Tech Men, Duke Women Win in ACC Openers for Both Teams

Duke welcomed Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech Saturday in Durham, N.C., for the first ACC dual meet for both teams. The Hokie men were led by Youssef Ramadan, the third-place finisher in the 100 butterfly at last year’s NCAA Championships, while teammates Nico Garcia, Mario Molla Yanes and Jacob Fisher also won twice in a 199-127 win. Meanwhile, Duke junior Sarah Foley, who was sixth in the 200 IM at NCAAs last year, won twice along with teammate Yixuan Chang as Duke won 200.5-127.5.

Ramadan led a Virginia Tech 1-2-3-4 finish in the men’s 100 fly as he clocked 47.84, and he put up a mark of 43.85 for a one-second win in the 100 freestyle. Garcia placed first in the 200 backstroke (1:46.64) before a blazing last 50 helped him get to the wall first in the 200 IM (1:50.96). Molla Yanes swam a time of 1:38.46 for a come-from-behind win in the 200 free, and then he touched out Duke’s Brad Sanford to win the 100 fly, 48.96 to 48.99. In diving, Fisher swept 1-meter (360.98) and 3-meter (421.73).

AJ Pouch delivered a strong performance in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.32), while Keith Myburgh won the 1000 free for the Hokies (9:20.54). Other winners for Virginia Tech included Landon Gentry (200 fly, 1:50.17), Luis Dominguez Calonge in the 500 free (4:32.50). Ramadan, Molla Yanes, Dominguez Calonge and William Koeppen swam a time of 2:56.37 for an easy win in the 400 free relay.

Duke’s men won a tight battle in the 200 medley relay with the team of David Chang, Cole Reznick, Sanford and Coleman Kredich touching in 1:28.76. Reznick won the 100 breast in 55.19, and Kredich took the win in the 50 free (20.67).

The Duke women were dominant right away as they finished 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. The team of Emma Shuppert, Kaelyn Gridley, Aleyna Ozkan and McKenna Smith won in 1:39.62. In the 1000 free, Yixuan Chang won in 10:07.56, and she won again in the 500 free (4:57.54), with Duke going 1-2 in both of those races as well. Foley’s wins came in the 200 free (1:47.47), 200 breast (2:11.94) and 200 IM (1:59.57), and she finished more than a second ahead of the field in all three races.

Gridley won the 100 breast (1:01.23) in a 1-2-3 finish for the Blue Devils, and Martina Peroni led a 1-2-3 for Duke in the 200 fly (1:59.05). Ozkan was the winner in the 100 fly (54.56). Kate Mullin took first in 3-meter diving (330.75).

For Virginia Tech’s women, Emma Atkinson won the 100 back (54.16) and 200 back (1:55.52), while the sprint freestyle races saw Madelyn Moore win the 50 free (23.25) and Fanni Gyurinovics take first in the 100 free (50.09). Izzy Mroz was first in 1-meter diving (294.68). The team of Carmen Weiler Sastre, Gyurinovics, Atkinson and Emily Claesson won the 400 free relay in 3:19.91.
