Virginia Swimming and Diving Teams Roll Past Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA December 19. THE nationally-ranked Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won all 11 swimming events in remaining perfect in dual meet competition with victories over Pittsburgh early this month at Trees Pool.

With its 129-106 win over the 23rd-ranked Panthers, the 10th-ranked Virginia men improve to 5-0, while the 13th-rated Cavalier women improve to 6-0 with their 126-106 victory.

Third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) and fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) combined to win five individual events in UVa's 129-106 win over Pittsburgh. Crippen won the 1000 free (9:09.27), the 500 free (4:30.57), and the 200 individual medley (1:51.22). Anderson was victorious in the 50 free (20.21) and the 100 free (44.90), and also swam the anchor leg on UVa's meet-opening 400 medley relay that clocked a winning time of 3:19.60. Fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), and fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) also swam legs on the winning relay.

Greenwood, Raab and Rogulj also recorded individual event wins for the Cavaliers. Greenwood touched first in the 200 backstroke (1:50.00), while Raab won the 200 butterfly (1:47.59). Rogulj recorded an exhibition win in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.91). Second-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J./Princeton Day) rounded out Virginia's individual event winners with a victory in the 200 freestyle as he clocked a time of 1:40.30. The Cavaliers rounded out the meet with an exhibition victory in the 400 freestyle relay. First-year Brett Murphy (Oakmont, Pa./Shady Side Academy), second-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie), second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview), and first-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College) combined to post a time of 3:07.16.

A trio of Cavaliers each won a pair of events in the Virginia women's swimming and diving team's 126-106 victory. Third-years Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) and Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep), and first-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) each won two events. Burke grabbed the top spot in the 1000 free (9:55.04) and 500 free (4:54.63), while Gordon won the 200 individual medley (2:05.65) and 200 backstroke (2:01.91). Lewis continued her dual meet dominance in the sprint events as she won the 50 free (23.88) and 100 free (51.32).

Lewis also anchored the Cavaliers' 400 medley relay that opened the meet with a victory in a time of 3:47.94. Third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), and first-year Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) also swam legs on the relay. Glover was also a member of UVa's 400 free relay that posted an exhibition win in the final event of the meet. First-year Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood), second-year Jenn Beiner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy), and second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) all swam legs on the relay that touched in 3:29.12.

Bland was also victorious in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.34, while Steiner earned an exhibition win in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.63). Third-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) rounded out the Cavaliers' event winners as she clocked a time of 2:03.68 in winning the 200 butterfly.

Pittsburgh swept the men's and women's diving events. Jeremy Stultz won the men's one and three-meter competitions with scores of 327.08 and 340.13, respectively. Colleen Kristobak posted scores of 251.48 and 276.90 win sweeping the women's one and three-meter diving competitions.

Virginia returns to dual meet competition on January 15 when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn. to swim against Tennessee and LSU. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon. The Virginia diving team returns to action January 3-5 when it competes in the Georgia Diving Invitational in Athens, Ga.
