IRVINE, California, August 8. TOM Shields provided the shock of the night as he upset the three-time Olympic champion in the 100 fly. Shields clocked a lifetime best time of 51.29, one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Phelps’ 51.30. Shields spoke to Swimming World afterwards about having the meet of his life and any potential race strategies he used to neutralize the early speed of Tim Phillips and the patented finish of Phelps.
