Stanford’s Allie Szekely would have joined her teammates in the final of the 200 IM after a best time in prelims, but she was disqualified for a one-hand touch. Undeterred, Szekely returned to the pool Friday morning and dropped more than two seconds off her best time in the 400 IM, touching in 4:02.70, to make it back as the second seed for the final.

After the race, Szekely explained how she reacted to the DQ and how she felt going into the race this morning. The freshman also explained how she’s been able to put her already-strong backstroke and breaststroke legs together for good IM swims since coming to college, and she discussed training with and racing against Ella Eastin and Katie Ledecky.
