Utah, Arizona Swimming Split; UNLV Struggles

LAS VEGAS – Utah and Arizona swimming split their dual meets while hosting UNLV struggled against both Pacific 12 conference foes.

The Utah men’s swimming and diving took first in the double-meet against Arizona and UNLV while the women’s squad beat out UNLV but were topped by Arizona this Saturday.

The men’s team defeated #20 Arizona, according to the CSCAA poll this week, 192-102 and UNLV, 187-113. The women’s team defeated UNLV, 208-91 but were topped by #10 Arizona, 210-90.

“Overall, a tremendous team effort today. On the women’s side, we gave Arizona some great racing. We couldn’t get the win and got a great win over UNLV. I’m really excited that we had a lot of in-season best times, both from the freshman and upper class men; some of the best duel-meets they have ever gotten which is really encouraging considering how hard we have been training,” said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra about the women’s finish today.

“For the men, to move to 5-0 is a terrific team effort against two teams who were top 20 at NCAA’s last year. It is a great accomplishment and we are feeling really proud. I think our freshman stepped up in a big way today to support our returning stars. Bence Kiraly, Kristian Kron and Nick Soedel were outstanding today winning multiple events each.”

There were 10 first place finishes from the Ute men; Bence Kiraly in the 1000 free and 500 free, Nick Soedel in the 200 free, 50 free and 100 free, Kristian Kron in the 200 back and 200 IM, Ganem Tebet in the 200 breast, Alex Fernandes in the 100 fly, and Jacob Crayne taking first in the one-meter dives.

Kiraly touched in first in the 1000 free with a time of 9:16.98 and first in the 500 free with a time of 4:22.72. Soedel claimed the top spot in the 200 free (1:39.39) as well as in the 50 free with a time of 20.03 and the 100 free (44.03).

Kron claimed the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.34 with Brandon Deckard following (1:48.87). Kron also took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.95. In the 100 back, Kron took second with a time of 49.48 with Deckard taking third (49.77) in the event.

Freshman Tebet took home his first win in his career with the Utes in the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.80.

Fernandes touched in the 100 fly with a time of 49.18 taking first in the event.

Jake Crayne took first in the one-meter dives with a score of 361.75. Josiah Purss took third in the dives (336.30). For the women, Amanda Casillas took second in the one-meter dives with a score of 254.20 and took third in the 3-meter dives (253.00).

In the three-meter dives for the men, Purss took third with a score of 318.85.

“Im happy with the meet today. WE had a rough three-meter even but then came back strong in the one-meter. Im very happy with the overall effort,”said Utah diving coach Richard Marshner about the dives today.

For the men, teaming up for second in the 200 medley was team of Kron, Jack Burton, Alex Fernandes and Sean Bloore with a time of 1:31.04.

Burton took second in the 100 breast (56.84) with Brandon Young taking fourth (58.36) and Tebet taking fifth (58.36).

Luis Macias claimed the second place spot in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.74 with Chris Taber trailing in third (1:50.27).

Teaming up for second in the 200 free relay was team of Alex Brown, Soedel, Fernandes and Kiraly with a time of 1:21.77.

For the women, in the 200 medley relay, team of Megan Kawaguchi, Stina Colleou, Petra Soininen and Guiliana Gigliotti teamed together for second with a time of 1:43.92. Also in the event was team of Amanda Barrett, Brianna Francis, Melissa Paahk and Madeline Jamora teaming up to take fifth (1:46.62).

Kawaguchi also took second in the 100 back with a time of 56.03. Also in the event was seventh place finish from Jenna Griffith (58.03).

Touching in second in the 200 fly was Soininen (2:03.69) with Isabelle Kearns trailing in third (2:07.09). In the 100 fly, Soininen took second with a time of 56.15.

Gigliotti went head to head with Arizona’s Taylor Shick in the 50 free. Gigliotti touched in second with a time of 23.48. Jamora took fourth 23.72) with Dorien Butter taking eighth (24.13) in the event. Gigliotti also took second in the 100 free with a time of 50.98.

Maddie Meisel claimed the second place spot in the 1000 free with a time of 10:16.55 with Kat Wickham taking 4th (10:31.43) and Isabella Kearns taking sixth (10:43.45). Mesiel also took second in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.73.

In the 200 free, taking fourth was Butter with a time of 1:52.10. Selin Ozturk took seventh (1:54.57) with Wickham taking ninth (1:56.24) in the event.

Amanda Barrett claimed the second place spot in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.99 while Hailey Pabst took fourth (2:04.33) in the event.

Colleou touched in third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.47 with Francis in fifth (1:06.23) and Jenna Marsh taking eighth (1:07.37). Colleou also took third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.81 with Francis trailing in fourth (2:19.98).

Taking fourth in the 200 IM was Francis with a time of 2:07.77. Kylie Boyce took eighth (2:11.95) with Hailey Pabst taking ninth (2:11.95).

Teaming up for a third place finish in the 200 free relay was team of Butter, Jamora, Williams and Gigliotti with a time of 1:34.48 with team of Jenna Marsh, Soininen, Kawaguchi and Pabst took fourth in the relay (1:37.54).

The men’s team will return to competition by hosting its first home event of the season as they take on Colorado Mesa next Friday, Nov. 7 at Ute Natatorium. The women will be back in action Friday, Nov. 14, hosting No. 4 California.

Arizona Press Release

The Arizona women’s swimming and diving team continued their undefeated season with a win over Utah (210-90) and UNLV (232.50-66.5) on Saturday at Buchanan Natatorium. The women took first in every event. Meanwhile, the men’s team fell to Utah 187-113, but defeated UNLV 172-126.

On the women’s side, Arizona got off to a quick start by earning a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Bonnie Brandon, Emma Schoettmer, Katja Hajdinjak and Taylor Schick won in 1:41.92.

The Wildcats picked up significant points in the 100 free with the top three finishers. Schick took the victory in 1:49.36 followed by Hajdinjak with 1:51.34 and Tjasa Oder with 1:51.74. Arizona also finished with the top three places in the 200 medley. Alexandra Martelle finished first with a time of 2:06.58 followed by Shannyn Hultin (2:07.00) and Cameron McHugh (2:07.37).

Then, Tjasa Oder won the 1000 free with a time of 9:52.17 and also took first in the 500 free finishing with 4:50.83.

Brandon continued the success for the Wildcats as she won the 100 back in 55.23. Later on, she also won the 100 free in 50.62.

Finishing first in the 100 breast, Sara Borendame had a time of 1:02.94 followed by Emma Schoettmer, touching just 5 hundredths of second later. Schoettmer then won the 200 breast in 2:15.10 with Borendame finishing second (2:15.34).

Elizabeth Pepper contributed significant points to the Wildcat victory finishing first in the 200 fly with 2:01.04 and winning the 100 fly in 55.47. McHugh later took first place in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.50.

To close out the day, Arizona took home first place in the 200 free relay as the team of Brandon, Schick, Paige Kremer and McHugh touched in 1:32.99.

For women’s diving, Samantha Pickens took first in the 3 meter with a score of 315.20 and the 1 meter (294.05). Sally Hacket took second in the 3 meter finishing with 281.25.

The Arizona men also got off to a good start for the day as the team of Michael Meyer, Andrew Sovero, Renny Richmond and Bradley Tandy won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.10.

In the 100 breast, Sovero also added a first place finish with a time of 55.39.

Ending the day, the team of Tandy, Brian Stevens, Richmond, and J.P. Beach took first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.57, touching before Utah by two tenths of a second.

Rafael Quintero place first for men’s diving in the 3 meter with a score of 360.70 and finished second in the 1 meter with 351.00.

The women compete next against UCLA on Fri. Nov. 14 and Sat. Nov. 15 against USC in Los Angeles. The men will match up against USC on Sat. Nov. 15 in L.A.

UNLV Press Release

The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their 2014-15 dual meet season on Saturday afternoon with a double-dual meet along with Arizona and Utah, and would fall to both Pac-12 schools. The Rebel men kept it close with No. 20 Arizona through the mid-point of the meet, before the Wildcats pulled away for a 172-126 victory. Utah meanwhile won its meet against the UNLV men 192-102. On the women’s side, No. 10 Arizona claimed a 232.5-66.5 win, while Utah’s women’s squad posted a 208-91 victory.

UNLV won two overall races in the men’s meet, with the first win provided by Henrique Machado in the 100 back in a time of 48.94. Balint Batka was the other event winner for the Rebels, in the 200 fly in 1:48.87. He also finished second in the 200 free. Other notable swims on the day included: Tom Paco-Pedroni in the 100 free (second) and the 200 medley relay team of Machado, Daniel Bullington, Kyle Virva and Forrest Beesley that also placed second in their event.

Julia Fehervari and Jessica Wong both posted third-place swims for UNLV on the afternoon, with Fehervari swimming 23.65 in the 50 free and Wong touching the wall in 2:02.59 in the 200 back. UNLV’s 200 free relay team of Elena Gavrilova, Michelle Troup and Zeined Khalfallah finished second, ahead of Utah’s ‘A’ squad.
