USC Trojans Extend Reign over Collegiate Water Polo Association Week 8 Rankings

The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the Men’s Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NEWPC) Top Five and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Week 8/October 25 Polls for the 2017 season.

The University of Southern California remains at No. 1 this week as the National Top 20 experiences significant changes from the October 18 voting.

Minor adjustments occur in the Division III Top 10 Poll with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges sticking at No. 1, while four other teams in the poll rise and fall.

Defending Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Champion Bucknell University hangs onto the top spot in the MAWPC Top Five rankings as a unanimous top selection, while Princeton University surpasses St. Francis College Brooklyn in the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the MAWPC, NEWPC, Golden Coast Conference, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), SCIAC and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2017 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 8/October 25)

The University of Southern California retains its position on top for the fourth week in a row by staying at No. 1 in the Week 8/October 25 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

USC (100 points), which returns to being a unanimous top selection leads a Top 20 in which change comes to the Top Five with defending National Champion the University of California (95 points) eclipsing the University of California-Los Angeles (89 points) to reclaim the runner-up position.

Stanford University (87 points), University of the Pacific (80 points) and the University of California-Irvine (74 points) remain locked in at No. 4-to-6, respectively, while the duo of Long Beach State University (68 points) and Pepperdine University (67 points) exchange the No. 7 and 8 slots.

The University of California-Davis (60 points), the University of California-Santa Barbara (54 points) and San Jose State University (49 points) remain at No. 9-to-11, respectively, for another week, while Princeton University (46 points) climbs to No. 12.

The University of California-San Diego (43 points) hangs on at No. 13 with Harvard University (32 points), Brown University (26 points) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (24 points) ascending to No. 14-to-16.

Bucknell University (17 points) and California Baptist University (17 points) move into a tie at No. 17 with St. Francis College Brooklyn (13 points) dropping back to No. 19.

Fordham University (4 points) and Santa Clara University (4 points)  complete the Top 20 in a tie for the final spot.

2017 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 8/October 25)

The Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remain at No. 1 in the Week 8/October 25 Men’s Varsity Division III poll.

Pomona-Pitzer (99 points) leads a Top 10 which experiences minor changes.

Johns Hopkins University (93 points) remains at No.2, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (85 points) acquires company from Chapman University (85 points) at No. 3.

Whittier College (82 points) and the University of Redlands (82 points) exchange the No. 5 and 6 spots with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (70 points), California Lutheran University (65 points), the University of La Verne (59 points) and the California Institute of Technology (44 points) hanging on at No. 7-to-10.

2017 Men’s Varsity Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 7/October 18)

Bucknell University retains its Preseason, Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5, Week 6 and Week 7 selection as the No. 1 team in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) as the Bison top the Week 8/October 25 Top Five Poll.

The 2016 MAWPC Champion Bison (100 points) are once again a unanimous top selection after previously earning 100 points in the Preseason, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5, Week 6 and Week 7 polls.

Fordham University (93 points), George Washington University (92 points), Wagner College (84 points) and Johns Hopkins University (65 points) retain the remainder of the positions in the Top Five.

2017 Men’s Varsity Northeast Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 8/October 25)

The one week reign of St. Francis College Brooklyn on top of the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five Poll becomes to a close as Princeton University takes control back in the Week 8/October 25 voting.

Princeton (98 points), which dropped behind the Terriers (94 points) following a 13-10 loss in Brooklyn two weeks ago, returns to the No. 1 berth after previously leading the Week 5 and 6 balloting.  2016 NWPC Champion Harvard University (93 points) – which topped the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4 Polls – remains at No. 3.

Brown University (85 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (80 points) round out the Top Five.
