USC Outlasts Cal Poly 152-104

Fresh off a win over UC-Santa Barbara, the USC men continued their success with a win over the men of Cal Poly.

Sophomores Pawel Furtek and Jon Knox and junior Michael Domagala each won twice to lead the USC men’s swimming team to a 152-104 win at Cal Poly on Saturday (Oct. 3).

USC, which improves to 2-0, opened the meet with a win in the 400y medley relay as senior Morten Klarskov, junior Steven Stumph, senior Maclin Davis and Domagala won in 3:21.87.

Furtek won the 500y (4:34.05) and the 1000y free in 9:23.12. Furtek edged senior teammate Ted Singley (4:35.68) in the shorter distance.

Domagala swept the butterfly races. He claimed the 100y fly in 49.20 and edged Singley in the 200y fly, 1:50.91 to 1:51.15. Knox won the 100y (50.74) and 200y back (1:51.66).

Junior Reed Malone, who won twice at UC Santa Barbara on Friday, won the 200y free in 1:39.87 while sophomore teammate Jason O’Brien was second (1:42.81).

Sophomore David Morgan Jr. won the 100y breast (57.35), freshman Kyle Grissom (21.21) and Davis (21.31) went 1-2 in the 50y free and Klarskov won the 100y free (45.48). Sophomore Jonah Hu won the 200y breast in 2:02.24, touching just ahead of Stumph’s 2:02.56.

USC closed the meet with a 1:23.40 in the 200y free relay from Morgan Jr., Grissom, Klarskov and Domagala.

Despite 15 Top-3 three event finishes on Saturday afternoon, the Cal Poly men’s swimming team was defeated by Southern California, 152-104, during the first dual meet of the season at the Anderson Aquatic Center. Senior Mickey Mackle (pictured) recorded the fastest 400-yard IM time of 4:01.35, as Cal Poly received 13 individual Top-3 times against the Trojans.

Southern Cal sophomore Pawel Furtek won two individual events, including the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:23.12 and the 500 free with a mark of 4:34.05.

The Cal Poly quartet of freshman Dominic Dalpiaz and Dominik Folkner, junior Caleb Davies and senior Blake Faris raced to the best 200-yard freestyle relay mark of 1:25.33, nearly four full seconds ahead of the next closest competitors.

Cal Poly sophomore Zach Cootes collected two top-three finishes, including the second-quickest 100-yard fly time of 51.25 and the third-best 200-yard fly mark of 1:51.73.

Davies collected two individual top-three performances against Southern Cal, including a 46.35 time during the 100-yard free (good for second overall) and a 50-free mark of 21.31 (third overall).

Cal Poly sophomore Brandon Nguyen placed second during the 100-yard breast with a time of 57.94 and third overall in the 200-yard breast with a mark of 2:08.85.

The Mustangs earned third overall in the 400-yard medley relay, as the foursome of Mackle, Davies and freshman Brian Whittington and Edward Yicompleted a time of 3:28.72.

Individually, Cal Poly freshman Archie Mitchell finished second overall in the 1000-yard free with a mark of 9:40.48, sophomore Pearu Pold used a 9:42.19 time in the 1000-yard free to capture third, and Mackle cemented third place in the 200-yard free with a time of 52.75. Mitchell also earned third in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:40.10 and Cal Poly freshman Garrett Schmid used a 1:54.81 time in the 200-yard back to finish second overall in the event.

Mustang freshman Hayden Hemmens took third overall in the 200-yard free with a mark of 1:43.50.

Cal Poly hosts its annual Green and Gold Intrasquad Meet at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Anderson Aquatic Center.
