USA Women Stop Brazil 11-8 On Day Three Of FINA World League Prelim

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, May 19. THE USA Women's Senior National Team strung together consecutive wins with an 11-8 defeat of Brazil earlier today on day three of the FINA World League Prelims.

Two goals each from Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/SD Shores) and Michelle Stein (Palm Desert, CA/NYAC) led the offense while Heather Stuart (Moraga, CA/Diablo) went the whole way in net stopping nine shots.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout with the United States grabbing a 3-2 lead after the first period. In the second frame Brazil would not back down adding on two more scores and Team USA held a 6-4 advantage at halftime. In the third period Brazil looked to rally outscoring the United States 3-2 to close within 8-7 as played moved to the fourth quarter. Team USA closed out the game strong posting three goals and allowing just one to take a three goal victory at 11-8.

Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA/NYAC), Kelly Rulon (Point Loma, CA/SD Shores), Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA/NYAC), Jillian Kraus (Tustin, CA/NYAC), Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Santa Barbara WP), Maddy Rosenthal (Miami, FL/Raider), and Ashley Grossman (Santa Monica, CA/LA Water Polo) all added to the scoring with a goal each. The United States went 2/2 on penalty shots but just 1/11 on power plays while Brazil was 2/3 on player advantages.

"We created a lot of great opportunities but we had trouble finishing. We also have to give Brazil credit for playing an inspired game," said USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian.

Team USA is off tomorrow and returns to action on Friday with a 3:30pm est match against Canada. Canada defeated the United States 17-7 on Monday.
