USA Swimming Sectionals, University Park: Last Night Complete

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, July 20. THE last night of swimming at the USA Swimming Sectional held on the campus of Penn State came to a close.

Joanna Thomas of GCIT Swimming cruised in the women's 800 free with a time of 8:55.97. Lindsay Vrooman, 16, of Pine Richland finished second in 9:04.15, while Courtney Otto, 15, of Star Swimming placed third in 9:08.11.

Josh Wakeley of Penn State clinched the men's 1500 free in 16:10.00, while Dan O'Connor, 16, of Syracuse Chargers touched second in 16:13.54. Matthew Schaefer, 15, of Pine Richland took third in 16:29.72.

Lauren Smart of Penn State snared the women's 200 back title in 2:20.79, while Christine Hammond, 14, of North Baltimore (2:22.77) and Alex Suppan, 17, of Green Mountain (2:22.90) rounded out the top three.

Patrick Murphy, 16, of Green Mountain then won the men's 200 back in 2:09.79, while Charlie Putnam, 15, of Machine Aquatics took second in 2:10.32. Jes Stephens, 15, of North Baltimore earned third in 2:11.13.

Michelle Myers of Penn State followed with a win in the women's 50 free. Myers touched in 26.71 with Megan Steeves taking second in 26.81 and Lindsey Deforrest of Penn State placing third in 26.90.

The men's 50 free featured a top-four Penn State sweep. Vincent Reydams won in 23.50, while John Austin (23.98), Jason Goldner (24.07) and Ben Ryan (24.25) completed the sweep.

Kaitlin O'Brien led a Penn State 1-2 in the women's 200 breast with a time of 2:34.60. Abby Hoisington placed second in 2:37.26 with Annie Zhu, 13, of Laguardia finishing third in 2:37.61.

Taylor Grey, 16, of Green Mountain eased through the men's 200 breast in 2:23.73, while Christian Higgins, 15, of New Canaan (2:26.33) and Steve Kustra of Jewish Community (2:26.64) completed the podium.

The 400 medley relays completed the meet. North Baltimore's Hammond, Rachael Schaffer, Camryne Morris and Jessie Krebs won the women's in 4:30.12, while Fairport Area's Ricky Henahan, Jake Fisher, Todd Winchell and Willy Brophy took the men's crown in 4:00.35.
