USA Swimming Open Water National Championships Slated for June 10, 12

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 6. THE top open water swimmers in the U.S. will compete June 10 and 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the 2011 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships. The top two finishers in the 10K race will automatically qualify for the FINA World Championships, which serve as the Olympic Trials in this event. Both races will take place on Fort Lauderdale Beach, across from the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

The 10K race will take place on June 10, while the 5K race will be on June 12. Only the 10K swim will serve as the qualifying race to earn a spot on the 2011 U.S. World Championship Team. The top two finishers in the 10K will automatically earn a spot to compete in the Olympic-distance 10K race at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, which also serves as the Olympic Trials for Open Water swimming. The winners will then have a choice to also compete at World Championships in either the 5K and 25K, or both. Additional details outlining the selection procedures can be found online.

2008 Olympian Mark Warkentin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific 10K Champion Chip Peterson (Pine Knolls Shores, N.C.) will compete in the men's 10K race in Fort Lauderdale. More than 50 men are expected to compete in the 10K swim that will also feature open water National Teamers Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.), Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.), and Joe Kinderwater (Baltimore, Md.).

The women's race will include over 40 swimmers such as 2009 10K National Champion Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky.), 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific 10K Champion Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.), 5K World Champion Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.) and open water National Teamer Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.).

In addition to the selection of the U.S. Open Water World Championship Team, the 10K will also serve as the selection competition for the 2011 World University Games that will take place in Shenzhen, China in August. Top finishers that meet the selection criteria and do not swim at the 2011 FINA World Championships will be eligible to compete at the World University Games.

In accordance with the water temperature recommendations adopted by USA Swimming this year, the site of the 2011 Open Water National Championships was moved from Fort Myers to Fort Lauderdale in April.
