PALO ALTO, California, August 2. CALIFORNIA's Dana Vollmer returned from winning the women's 100 fly world title to put forth another winning time at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.
Vollmer, who has been back from Shanghai, China for less than 48 hours, captured the women's 100 fly national title with a 57.26. That swim is the fourth fastest in the world this year. That upgraded Vollmer's runner-up finish at the 2010 USA Swimming Long Course Nationals held in Irvine last year.
Western Kentucky's Claire Donahue grabbed second-place honors with a 58.05 after going out under world-record pace in the event. She clocked a 26.60 on the way out, but could not hold off Vollmer down the stretch, as Vollmer beat her 30.40 to 31.45, in the final 50 meters.
Stanford's Elaine Breeden (58.60), Longhorn's Kathleen Hersey (58.78), Auburn's Olivia Scott (58.94), North Coast's Kendyl Stewart (59.06), Trojan's Lyndsay De Paul (59.22), Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson (59.39), Stanford's Felicia Lee (59.58) and SwimMAC's Katherine Mills (1:00.05) also swam for the national title.
Meanwhile, Tennessee's Jennifer Connolly won the B final in 59.02, while Bruin's Jasmin Jahanshahi claimed the C final in 59.63.
